She’s My Hero

Sharing is caring!

Superman was my little brother’s hero growing up. He always felt that Superman would come through whenever he’d need help. This ideology caused him to have an extraordinary level of fearlessness. I remember him tying a pillowcase across his neck as he leaped from the top bunk. After my mom bandaged him up, he was curious as to why he couldn’t fly and why Superman didn’t help him.

My mom explained that “Superman was from the planet Krypton and that on that planet, those people could fly. However, on planet earth, we have a thing called gravity that keeps us on the ground so we won’t float away.”  She continued that “Superman defies the gravity of earth because of his superpowers. “My brother stated that he wanted superpowers. That’s when my mom explained to him that he already has superpowers.

Mom told him that as long as he prayed and was obedient to God, he would get everything he needed and most of what he wanted. She suggested that he call on God when he is afraid and not Superman because Superman lived in tv-land. I watched as she comforted my little brother and made him feel good. It wasn’t the first time nor the last time my mother came to the rescue for her children.

My heart melted for my mom in a whole new way. I felt the love that she had for my brother and her cultivating of his imagination. If it were me, I probably would have said to my brother, “Silly boy. People can’t fly and Superman is not real.” I didn’t have her grace. However, I was curious as to why she didn’t say that.

After my brother went on his way and continued to play, I asked like any seven-year-old would, “Ma, you know there’s no Superman, right? Joseph is almost four and he shouldn’t be acting like that.” My Mom said,  “You are never too old to believe in something. As long and he doesn’t try and act like Superman it’s okay for him to believe in SupermanSuperman is a nice man that works for the Daily Planet Newspaper and he helps people. He has great qualities for your brother to admire. I just wanted to give him another hero.”

Then she asked where Joanne was. I said, “Sleeping.” She asked if Joanne would be okay if I helped her cook or if I wanted to move Joanne to the couch. Joanne was my baby doll. I went and placed my baby doll on the coach and I started to help my mom cook, which at that age, it was me asking her “Why? Why? Why?”

“Why do you put that in there? Why do you wait before you do that? Why is that, that color?” She would patiently answer me. Every once in a while she would ask about Joanne and ask me to check on her. Dinner was finally done. At that point, my mom asked if Joanne wanted a bottle. So I gave Joanne her bottle, washed my hands and ate dinner.

After dinner, my mom asked if Joanne was ready for bed. I changed Joanne and put her to bed. After spending time with my family watching tv,  my mom asked if I was ready for bed. As she tucked me in she gave me a big kiss and asked me to kiss her grandbaby good night. I gave Joanne a kiss and told her, “Granny said goodnight.”

The next day at breakfast, I spilled my plate and since I was the last one to eat out of a family of 11, that was the last of the cooked breakfast on the floor. My mom helped me clean the floor and asked if I wanted cereal. I explained as tears ran down my eyes that I wanted eggs and rice because it was my favorite.

My mom bought an extra plate to the table and gave me all the rice and eggs I wanted from her plate. We ate and talked, then it was time for me to head off to school. I realized later at school that my little seven-year-old body nearly ate all of that food. I started to wonder if my mom had enough.

Therefore, after school, I said, “Mom, I’m sorry for eating your food. Are you sad?” With the sweetest and most loving voice a mother could have, she said, “Baby, everything I have is yours. Did you know it gives me complete joy to feed you, do your hair, and share with you what I can?” I thanked her and gave her the card I made for her at school. She smiled and thanked me while grabbing me with a big hug.

My mom is that kind of woman. She always does what she can for her children and now, also for her grandchildren. During secondary school, high school and college, her love never failed. Therefore, when I think of Heros, my mom comes to mind. She is such a loving and amazing person. I recall having a migraine in college and all I wanted was my mom. When I called her, she hummed to me on the phone until I fell asleep.

My mom’s love is unconditional, therefore when I became pregnant I didn’t think I had that kind of love in me. But when I heard my daughter’s heartbeat, to my surprise, that kind of love just came out. I have three beautiful daughters now and I love nothing more than being their mom. Throughout my life, my mom has been a constant source of love. I know that no matter what life brings, my mom will be there. I pray that in my girls later days, that they have that kind of love for me.

How is your relationship with your mom? What kind of mom would you like to become moms?  What kind of mom would you like for your children dads? Please comment, I sure would like to know.
