The Day After Halloween

The first day in November was the first sign of Christmas when I was growing up. On Halloween night, my mom and dad would stay up late taking down all the scary decorations and replacing them with all things Christmas. I can remember my mom kissing me good night and asking did I enjoy trick or treating. I don’t recall ever saying no because I was always able to fill my bucket with treats galore.

Tomorrow is a new day. Oh, what shall we celebrate?

My mom would then smile and she’d say, “Tomorrow is a new day. Oh, what shall we celebrate?” She would pause for a moment as we rubbed our noses together. She’d continue, “I wonder what the night would bring?” I always went to sleep Halloween night excited and ready for November 1st. It was both me and my mom’s favorite day. It was also the start of our Christmas countdown. Yeah, I know there is another holiday between Halloween and Christmas. I am so grateful for Thanksgiving and believe me, I had a lot to be thankful for, besides my family knew how to put together a feast.

The colors of Christmas and its representation was so magical to me growing up. I loved watching movies and reading stories that were about Christmas. Sometimes, when I was too excited to sleep, I’d sneak in the hall and watch my parents decorate and I would fall asleep there with my cat, Sheba.

I was never disappointed with what I saw that November morning. My favorite time was during the year we had a ten-foot, silver tree that sparkled…like magic! I mean it made everything look beautiful. I always loved my mom’s decorations and I was eagerly waiting for Thanksgiving when she would finally light the trees up and everything else.

Thanksgiving

Every year on Thanksgiving when she finally lit the house up and added her finishing touches, my entire family would be in awe. It was just down-right beautiful. While feasting, everyone would take turns having their picture taken by the tree for our holiday cards.

When I grew up, Santa always came early as usual.  He showed up early every year during Thanksgiving night and our presents would be under the tree the next morning. My sister and I would get in trouble for poking a little hole in the wrapping paper and moving the bow to its place once we had a peep to see if Santa got us what we wanted.

Santa couldn’t think of anything for my parents therefore, he would leave us an envelope with our parent’s names. You guessed it. “Mommy” and “Daddy” would each have designated dollars for us to shop for the other parent’s gift, per Santa’s wishes. I loved being Santa’s helper. ‘Elf Michelle’ absolutely loved shopping since I realized what it was for and who it was from.

Santa also wanted us to make hand-made cards for all of our relatives. It was such a fun time of year full of crafts. We also made ornaments and decorated our stockings. To this day, I love to craft and decorate for every holiday and my mom’s passion was given to me honestly. I took on all her traditions and share those same experiences with my children, therefore, Christmas lasts nearly 2 months in our home.
