Health Doesn’t Have to be Hard: Simple Ways to Improve Your Lifestyle

Sharing is caring!

Many of us blame our poor lifestyle on a lack of time or money. We don’t have the budget to buy healthy ingredients or the time to cook them. We’re too busy to exercise and too stressed to do anything about it. Sound familiar? There’s no denying that modern life is stressful, we work long hours and have to keep many plates spinning to be successful. Raising children, running a household, working, maintaining relationships and much more.

However when it comes to our health there really is no excuse, we only get one body and so it’s imperative that we treat it well. If we want to see our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren grow up and live a long and fruitful life then we have to take control. Even if you already live a healthy lifestyle, you might still feel terrible due to mistakes you’re making- are you fit sick? Perhaps you’re just sick in general, and are sick and tired of, well… feeling sick and tired? Here are some of the simple changes you can make in your life to live more healthily and start feeling better.

Make Healthy Swaps

We all know we should be eating plenty of fruit and veg, whole grains and lean protein, but what does this really mean in practice? It doesn’t mean you have to throw away everything in your cupboards and stop enjoying the things you like, in fact, it can be incredibly simple. Making healthy swaps can make all the difference, you don’t have to make huge changes to your eating habits this way. Depending on the way you eat, this could be all you need or it could be the start of making further changes if needed. Swap white bread, pasta, and rice for wholemeal. Sprinkle fresh and dried fruit on your breakfast cereal instead of sugar, and drink fruit infused water instead of fizzy drinks. You don’t have to survive on ‘rabbit food’ or quit eating chocolate forever. Instead, make healthy swaps and enjoy more calorific or fattening foods in moderation. This is a lifestyle change rather than a ‘diet’ and something you can easily stick with long term. Keep making healthy swaps as you go, and before you know it you’ll have cleaned your diet right up and be eating this way purely out of habit. Cooking more and eating out or ordering in less is a good healthy swap you can make too. When you cook your own food you know exactly what goes in it, there’s no sneaky added salt, sugar or oil and it allows you to keep tabs on what goes into your body. Save the takeaways and restaurant meals for special occasions, you’ll be healthier and it will be easier on the wallet too. Plus you’re likely to enjoy it more if it’s less of a regular thing.

Find an Exercise You Enjoy

If the thought of 6am runs before work in the cold and dark make you stressed, or you hate the idea of sweating it out at the gym in front of loads of other people- don’t do these things! There are so many ways you can move your body and get fit, so if a certain kind of exercise fills you with dread then do something else! You could go for hikes or bike rides, you could go swimming, or take up a dance class. You could buy a trampette and follow a bounce workout video, join a martial arts club, the list is endless. Don’t rule something out unless you’ve tried it as you might be surprised, however, if something isn’t for you then that’s fine. If you find something that you do enjoy then you’re more likely to stick with it. Rope in a loved one to come with you, you get the social element and a bit of healthy competition. Plus you can motivate each other when the going gets tough. The trick is to find an activity that you enjoy and it won’t feel like you’re exercising, it will just feel like good fun.

Invest in a Fitness Tracker

There are numerous fitness tracking devices on the market these days, from Fitbits to Apple watches and much more. Do some research and find a model that suits your budget, needs, and style. Even if you’re not a huge fitness fanatic, these are great for helping you to stay on track and monitor your overall health. They can track your heart rate, how much exercise you’re doing, how many steps, how many calories you’re eating and burning and what your sleep is like. Chances are you will already know how tired you are if you’re not getting enough sleep, however seeing them there in black and white can really motivate you into doing something about it. As well as feeling tired and irritable the next day, lack of sleep is also causing serious damage to both the body and brain and do it’s not something to overlook as part as your healthy lifestyle. It’s a lightweight device worn on the wrist, and also functions as a regular watch so you can swap it out for your regular timepiece without any bother. They’re available at lots of different price points and offer a variety of different functions therefore find one that works for you and your lifestyle.

Attend All of Your Screenings

Screenings are a way to spot problems early in otherwise healthy people. They can help to pick up illnesses and diseases in the earliest and most treatable stages. The screenings you will be invited to will be based on your age and gender, or in some cases any existing health issues you or your immediate family have. If you’re registered with a GP you will be sent out your screening invitations so there’s nothing you need to do other than turn up on the day and have the simple procedure done. It’s nothing to be worried about and in most cases, the results will be negative, it just means if you are in the process of developing certain types of cancer or other illnesses it can be picked up and sorted quickly. Make sure your address and contact details are up to date with your doctor and be sure to attend any suggested screenings. It’s a good way to stay in control of your health and is both proactive and responsible. Attending regular dental check-ups, eye checkups, mole mapping and other appointments are useful too.

Speak to Your GP About Your Medication

If you have an ongoing health condition, chances are you’ve been taking medication for quite some time. At first, you might have noticed side effects but less so as time wore on- this might not have been a case of you getting used to the chemicals. What could have happened is that you just stopped noticing how ill you felt. If feeling tired, sick and sluggish is the new ‘normal’ for you then chances are you’re pretty miserable and don’t even realize how bad you feel most of the time. Switching medication, or coming off it completely can help with this. Under the guidance of your doctor, speak about what your options are and consider making a change. For example, if you’re diabetic then losing weight and revamping your lifestyle could reverse the condition to the point where you no longer need medication. If you’re taking tablets for things like IBS or other issues then lifestyle changes or even herbal supplements could be an option.
