Lock 1.5

Sharing is caring!

“Was this it? Was my life ending?” is what went through my head as my eyes shut. “I am not ready.” I thought as my eyes opened to my best friend Marilyn pleading for me to fight as hard as I could. I could hear the ambulance’s sirens as the paramedic flashed a light in my eye. “She looked at me! She looked at me!” is what I could hear Marilyn say as my eyes became heavier and I drifted off.

Now I could see shadows and what seemed to be fluorescent light. I felt like I was being rushed down the halls of a hospital. With the doctors and paramedics running beside my bed, was both Marilyn and William. Marilyn was asking the doctors if I would be okay. The nurse begged her to let them take me to the operating room. William sounded frightened as he cried, “Please forgive me.” I had never heard him sound so scared. He repeated, “Forgive me. Please Lock? Forgive me.” The doors closed.

William held Marilyn as she sobbed uncontrollably. ‘Forgive me’ were the words that played in my head as I remembered just three nights ago, William was standing at my door saying the same thing. “Lock, forgive me.” Or could he have been referring to tonight when I needed him more than ever while he had another woman occupying his time?

Just the thought of him with another woman is breaking my heart. I could feel the pain as if someone had their hand around my heart squeezing it more and more. I felt like it was about to explode.

I could not have imagined that within 18 months, not only would I fall deeply in love with him, but my heart would be completely and utterly shattered.

I remember calling my little sister and balling my eyes out. She hurried over to console me. This brave little sister of mine who had defeated the odds and crushed cancer just a couple of years earlier.

I remember her being very cheerful when she busted into my apartment with the biggest smile ever. She said she needed me to help pick out her prom dress because Kevin Jackson asked her to prom, and she just knew she was going to be crowned queen.

She grabbed a Kleenex from the nightstand, wiped my tears, and gave me the biggest hug. She whispered, “Cast your cares.” A sentiment I helped us nearly every day she was fighting cancer,  When she would cry about her cancer, I would hug her and whisper, “cast your cares.” Then we would spend time doing something she enjoyed.

She jumped up from the bed straight into my closet, pulled out a pair of my ripped jeans and a shirt of my alma mater, threw them on the bed, ran to my master bedroom, and started the shower.

While I was taking the shower, she forced me into, she told me that she had been to the doctor recently because she had been feeling weird for a few weeks so, she wanted to spend time with her big sis just in case she was getting bad news.

I stuck my head out from behind the shower curtain and asked what she meant by weird.

She said she was getting dizzy sometimes when she stood up. I turned the shower off, grabbed my robe and stepped out. I then grabbed her hand and led her to my bed. Underneath her huge smile, I saw the fear. I felt bad that my little sister needed me while I was yet nursing a broken heart. I hugged her and said, “Everything is going to be just fine. TEAM LOCK, FOREVER!”

We left and spent a few hours shopping for the perfect prom dress and accessories, after which, I dropped her back at my parent’s house. My mom and dad hadn’t made it home yet from their weekly date night. I asked her to call me if she needed anything. I hugged her and headed home. When I got off the elevator I could see William sitting on the steps outside my apartment door. He stood up and headed towards me. I was not ready for this interaction.

Tears started to pour from my eyes as he came closer. “Lock, please forgive me,” he said, as he reached out to hug me. I looked at him and said, “I can’t do this right now. Please William, if you ever loved me, just leave….”
