7 Smart Tips For Stay-At-Home Moms To Successfully Bounce Back to an Office Job

Sharing is caring!

Making the choice to go back to work is a big deal. Even if you were a successful career woman before your kids came into the world, your priorities likely changed significantly upon becoming a mom.

Whether you’re trying to recapture your previous work ethic or develop a new one, there are a few things you should to do set the stage for your success.

  1. Decide Where You Want to Jump In

Do you want a job that’s really easy, routine, and predictable, or do you want something slightly more challenging? Is the office job you’re looking for something that might require a special certification? You might want to get an education first. Sure, you’ll wait a little longer, but the payoff will be much better. A career that requires extra education might also be the same kind of career that allows you to start contributing to a college fund for your kids.

  1. Create an At-Home Structure That Accommodates Your Career

Moms are busy bees. You probably do a lot to keep the house clean, the laundry done, the pets cared for, and the children fed. If your children are a little older, you might want to consider creating a comprehensive chore structure that requires meaningful contributions on their part. Outside of keeping their rooms clean, children can even prepare simple meals and vacuum small rooms. You’ll also be teaching them practical life skills and encouraging them to develop great habits.

  1. Slowly Incorporate Your Job Search Into Your Life

You probably can’t devote every waking moment of your life to a job search. In fact, even your new office job needs to be a slower transition. Start by setting aside an hour every morning to look at job boards and do a little networking. Set aside 30 minutes after dinner time to check your email and follow up on leads.

  1. Consider Scheduling and After-School Plans

If no one is home when your kids get there from school, that might be alright. If they’re old enough to stay for an hour or so by themselves (like middle school or high school kids), there’s no need to panic. If your kids are younger, you might want to arrange for them to attend hobbies, classes, or after school programs that are relevant to their interests. It will enrich their lives while simultaneously buying you a little more time.

  1. Contemplate Your Career Future

Don’t settle for a dead-end office job if you’d like to be able to grow with the position as your kids grow into adulthood. Look for a position that has some room for advancement. You might not want to move up right away, but it’s nice to know that you’ll have the option if the time becomes available and your lifestyle circumstances allow for it.

  1. Optimize Your Responsibilities

If you were usually in charge of a wealth of household responsibilities, you’re going to need to condense them all when you have the time. Look into starting meal prep for your family, so you don’t need to run home from work to cook. Some chores can be outsourced, such as yardwork and carpet cleaning. Even if you’re spending a little bit to keep things running, you’re still making money. Just be wise about how you budget.

  1. Make Sure Your Partner is Truly On Board

If you live with your partner, responsibilities and role changes should be discussed before they take place. You want to ascertain that your partner is willing to step up and fill in some of the gaps. This can be difficult if you both have full time jobs, but a few long conversations and some well drawn plans can help you set the foundation for great home and career lives.

Lastly, don’t feel overwhelmed or push yourself too hard. It’s probably going to take you a while to adapt to all of the changes that will take place once you start your job. Be optimistic and adaptable. You’ll be surprised how far that mindset can take you.

  1. These are ALL such GOOD tips! Number 4 will definitely take the stress off – leaving work before others to pick up the kids from school! AND, they will be learning a new skill or if doing sports getting some well needed exercise, while socially bonding. I feel like my kids never get enough time to just run around in school, so it would be good regardless of whether I worked outside of the home or not!

  5. I’m not a mom but I have had breaks in my career. If there’s one thing I realized it’s that the challenges are harder in my head than in reality. Once you give it a go, you will find a way to make it work. Big shoutout to all mums – whether stay-at-home or work-from-home or full/part-time employed!
