Conan O’Brien celebrated late-night talk show host, once had this to say: “All I ask is one thing, and I’m asking this particularly of young people that watch: Please do not be cynical. I hate cynicism. For the record, it’s my least favorite quality — it doesn’t lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you’re kind, amazing things will happen. I’m telling you, amazing things will happen.” It’s not hard to see how this quote has its own sense of profundity. We can apply it to our lives in many different ways.
We’d say that the middle part is one of the most important things to consider here. No one in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. You might have noticed this in your own life. Sometimes, we need to take a new path, change our ideas for the future, and adapt to our circumstances. Does this mean that we live a poorer quality of life? Not at all. It might be that someone in your family comes down with an illness. But through the mutual care and squeezing the most out of their quality of life, they actually experience some of the most emotionally profound and true years of their life. This is a generalization, but it goes to show that sometimes, the alternative or silver lining can redeem that which happens to us, or the changes we experience.
Adjusting for the alternatives in life can be difficult sometimes, but can help you in many ways. Just be sure you have the following to consider also:
When There’s A Will, There’s A Way
While it might be that circumstances do not happen quite the way you want them to, in our amazing society there are almost always methods to help you out. To use the illness example, it might be that while suffering those symptoms can be extremely hard, managing them and gaining a quality of life is more than possible if you hope to engage with the recovery process. It’s quite amazing to see returning veterans who might have lost limbs on the battlefield come back, and with a mixture of physical therapy and hard, dedicated effort learn to walk on one artificial limb. This gives credence to the idea that always when there’s a will, there is absolutely a way.
This might even go for the milestone areas of your life. It can be quite disheartening for certain couples to realize that they are unable to conceive children. It can especially knock the confidence of the one side of the relationship whose body is ‘failing’ them in this instant. However, it might be that using surrogacy professionals, opting for IV treatment or potentially even adopting can provide them with that family feeling they have desired for so long. There is always a way.
While you may have to accept compromise and try to deal with certain circumstances, it can be hard to when our emotions are getting the better of us. It’s pretty common for most people to relate to a disappointment with a feeling of deep upset. However, sometimes it can be of serious help to look for the good in each and every situation. It might be that the lesson has something to teach you, or is a call to action. For example, couples who give birth to children with a mental or physical disability, despite the incredible challenges and new orbits they have to base their life around, will find love like never before.
It can be worthwhile to look after yourself closely in these scenarios, in seeing the good in every situation so long as you can look for it, and to be grateful for what you have. This can help you adjust with much more speed, but it’s also important to give yourself time, and realize that forcing feelings only makes it harder for you to fully process them. Life can be hard and beautiful in equal measure, so be sure to take them both in your stride.
You’re Who You Are Today
No matter if an alternative is much better than you had hoped, or that you have to adjust to a life much less aimed at your original plans, it’s important to remember that you are who you are today as a consequence of everything you’ve gone through in life. Without those things happening, you wouldn’t be the great person you are today, nor might your family be so close. Keeping this in mind can help you find joy in the difficulties, or simply help you gain more gratitude for every positive.
With these tidbits of advice, adjusting for the alternatives in life is sure to be a promising process.
