Taking Active Steps to Avoid and Prevent Injury

Taking Active Steps to Avoid and Prevent Injury

The majority of us will experience some sort of injury in our lives. For the unlucky amongst us, these could be major and leave us hospitalized. For others, they will be minor and more of an annoyance or grievance than a genuine source of pain and suffering. But regardless of the severity of our injuries, we do need to take active steps to avoid and prevent injuries at all costs. While some things will happen regardless of how careful we are (after all, accidents can be caused by others’ irresponsibles actions, nature, or simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time), there are a few different precautions that you can take to protect yourself. So, let’s take a moment to look at some places where people commonly injure themselves, along with a little advice on how to avoid injury in each!

The Gym

It’s the beginning of a new year and many of us have made resolutions to head to the gym and start a new exercise regime. This is great! After all, it is recommended that the average adult gets one hundred and fifty minutes of moderate aerobic exercise or seventy-five minutes of vigorous aerobic exercise a week. But you do need to make sure that you carry out exercises properly in order to prevent sports-related injuries. When you join the gym, make sure to book in for induction before using any equipment. This will see a member of staff show you how to use machines, weights, and other equipment that the gym supplies. If possible, go above and beyond this. Hire a personal trainer. They will be able to supervise you during sessions, correcting your posture and ensuring that you don’t push yourself too far at any point.

Work

Considering you spend a large proportion of your time at work, you need to make sure that the workplace you are operating in is safe and that the tasks you are expected to carry out are safe. Now, if you do notice any safety hazards or risks, it’s important that you speak to your employer about them. Many people feel reluctant to do this, as they fear that they will be punished or fired. But your employer cannot legally do this. It is their responsibility to care for their workers and to provide them with a safe working environment. If you do confront your employer about a health and safety concern and they are non-compliant, consider hiring a lawyer who will be able to take serious action which will provide you with the workspace and role you are legally entitled to.

Home

Your home should be a safe haven. So, make sure that it definitely is! Make sure that faults are dealt with by relevant professionals (whether they may be plumbers, electricians, glaziers, or roofers). Avoid having too many wires lying around. Keep electronics out of the bathroom. These common-sense steps can dramatically boost your safety.

Sure, it’s easy to assume that the worst will never happen. But take hold of the reigns and actively improve your own safety! Hopefully, some of the above advice will come in handy during this process!
