The last thing that we are going to want to hear as a parent is that our child is finding it hard to get to grips with their learning. Despite our best efforts, there are a variety of reasons why a child may find school hard. They may be a quick fix, or they may be something that is going to take longer to work on.
To help you to make sure that your child does as well as they can, we have put together some of our top tips to help a failing child to succeed at school.
Ask for help from a teacher
Teachers are there for a reason, to help children at school to learn and be the best that they can be. This means that it is a great idea to do whatever you can to work with them. Ask them what they think could be the root of the issues with your child’s learning and make some recommendations on what needs to happen. Then when they give them to you, make sure that you listen. They may not be able to offer any advice on what to do that you haven’t already tried, but chances are that they can recommend something.
See if there is a reason for their issues
We shouldn’t make excuses for our children, but this doesn’t mean that we can’t do whatever we can to find out whether there is another reason for their trouble at school. There can be a variety of reasons why they are finding it hard to learn, this could be something that is obvious or another problem that you may not even realize such as child hearing loss or autism. By trying to find out more about what could be causing your child a problem, you can do whatever you can to help them.
Help them to manage their schoolwork
Whilst you can’t do your child’s schoolwork for them, what you can do is try to help them to organize what they need to do. Find a way that they can plan their time better when they are at home. This may not always be the same approach that you would take, but if you can recommend ways that they can organize their time and get as much work done as possible, then this will definitely benefit them in the short and the long-term.
Speak to your child
It is important that you speak to your child about what is happening. They may not want to disclose any problems that they may have and may even try and avoid the conversation completely. However, you should try your best to engage with them. It is important that you do whatever you can to take any emotion out of the conversation and instead focus on the facts. That way you can do what you can to learn why they are finding things hard and what it is that you (or the school) can do to help them to get back on track.
Reward them when they do well
If you think that the issues with your child may be down to a lack of effort and interest rather than actual educational ability; then you may want to think about ways that you can reward them when they do try hard. There are a variety of ways that you can try and reward your child and you need to make sure that you find the right way for them. However, the main aim is that you find something that will encourage them to try harder with their learning.
Remember that kids can just have a bad day
Of course, if the problem with schoolwork has been going on for some time, then you may think that there is no way out of it, however, this isn’t really the case. Children are far more resilient than we may realize and even if they are finding things hard, then this doesn’t mean that they always will. In fact, things may change without them ever really realizing it. Children can, and do, have a blip in their education. This means that all this stress and worry could one day be a distant memory.
It is important that our children do well at school, this is obvious, but this doesn’t mean that we should be focused on that and nothing else. Make sure that your child is happy and healthy and then in time, the rest should follow.
