Easy Ways Your Family Can Be Greener in Everyday Life

Sharing is caring!

Now that climate change is at the forefront of many people’s minds, there has been a big drive to improve the green credentials of individuals, families, and nations across the globe. If you want to ensure that your family is doing its part in the fight against rising global temperatures, below you will find several simple changes you can make to be greener in everyday life…

Switch to reusables

Instead of getting your takeaway coffees in a plastic cup or wrapping your kids’ lunches in plastic wrap or foil, switch to reusables such as collapsing bamboo coffee cups or beeswax sandwich wraps and you will instantly cut down on the amount of trash your family creates with very little effort on your part.

Consider an electric car

A vehicle is probably essential to your life as a family, enabling your to get to work and school with ease, but cars that are powered by gas can be very bad for the planet, producing air pollution and contributing to the climate change problem. If you can, switching to electric cars or hybrid vehicles is a great way to improve your green credentials and do your part towards a cleaner, less polluted local environment.

Buy vintage clothing

If your family likes to look good, but you’re worried about the ecological impact of fast fashion, start shopping at local vintage stores and on websites like eBay, where you will find some amazing vintage clothing at great prices, which will enable you all to dress uniquely without hurting the planet.

Buy energy-efficient appliances

From fridges to lightbulbs, it is now possible to buy low-energy options that do the job every bit as well as your old appliances while cutting your family’s environmental impact, What’s more, because they use less energy, they’ll, save you a significant sum on your household bills too.

Recycle

Recycling is one of the easiest ways your family can be a little greener. All it takes is a little effort and a couple of recycling boxes to get started. In some places, you can even earn a little pocket money by selling on your glass bottles, jars, etc. which can make the whole process of recycling a lot of fun for young children who can earn a few cents for their efforts.

Cycle

You probably can’t and don’t want to ditch the car completely, but I bet there are lots of fairly short journeys that you, as a family, could do by bike, and doing so will not only help the environment but also help to keep you all fit and healthy, and provide you with an opportunity for good family fun too.

Buy less

One of the biggest things you can do to be a greener family, that involves pretty much no effort at all, is to stop[ buying all that unnecessary stuff that you don’t really need or even want that much. Instead, focus on buying high-quality items, whether it’s furniture, clothing, or toys, that you truly need, love, and know you will use again and again. You’ll save money and the planet, what’s not to love!

As you can see, going green as a family really can be easy!

  1. Well, for one, we do not go out everyday. Even before the pandemic. My husband works in the same building where we live, our kids are homeschooled. The fact that we use very little gas speaks about our contribution to the environment.
