15 Powerful Affirmations for Every Woman Who is Still “Becoming”

Advertisements

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the word “becoming.” It’s such a beautiful, active word, isn’t it? It implies that we aren’t stuck, that we aren’t finished, and that the story is still being written. I just finished watching the Becoming documentary on Netflix for the third time, and as a Michelle from the South Side of Chicago myself, it just hits different.

When you’re a lover of the book and the movie like I am, you start to see the layers. You realize that “becoming” isn’t about a destination. It’s about the grit, the pivots, and the courage to own your story—even the messy chapters. In honor of Black History Month, I wanted to write a little tribute to every woman out there who is currently in her own season of evolution.

The Magic of the “New Track”

One of the most powerful things I took away from the film is the idea that we aren’t trying to get back to who we used to be. Michelle mentions that she isn’t trying to find her way back to a “normal” that no longer exists; instead, she’s creating a “new track” forever.

That is so freeing.

How often do we stress ourselves out trying to recreate a past version of our lives? Whether it’s life after a big career change, raising kids, or just moving to a new city, the goal isn’t to go backward. The goal is to take everything we’ve learned and lay down a brand-new path.

Grit, Grace, and the South Side Spirit

Seeing the behind-the-scenes footage of the arena tour and the intimate moments with her family reminded me that resilience is a quiet thing. It’s in the way she handles the “slap in the face” of a changing political landscape or how she leans on her mother and brother for a good laugh when things get heavy.

She shows us that you can be a historical figure and still be a work in progress. You can fill arenas and still be a girl from Chicago who is just trying to do right by her community.
