Why This South Side Michelle is Re-Watching Becoming

Sharing is caring!

I just finished watching Becoming on Netflix for the third time, and let me tell you… it hits differently every single time. Especially right now, as I’m walking through my own season of “becoming.” But this time, it felt deeply personal. You see, like the former First Lady, I’m a Michelle from the South Side of Chicago.

Watching her isn’t just about seeing a historical figure or a “glossy” portrait of a celebrity. It’s like seeing a neighbor, a sister, or a version of myself. In honor of Black History Month, I had to revisit this because this woman truly is everything. There is a specific kind of grit and heart that comes from our side of the city, and seeing her carry that onto the world stage is a constant reminder that our beginnings don’t limit our destinations.

The film is so intimate, catching those small, “un-posed” moments that make you realize she’s just as human as the rest of us. You see her being teased by her brother, Craig, about her high-waisted belt. You see the quiet, humorous, and sometimes blunt interactions with her mother, Marian Robinson. It’s those family dynamics—the laughter and the grounding—that make her feel accessible.

But it’s not all laughter. She’s incredibly open about the “messy” parts of life, too. She talks about the reality of marriage counseling with Barack and the hard work it took to navigate the pressures of their lives together. She reflects on the pain of the 2017 inauguration, describing the lack of diversity in the crowd as a “slap in the face”. It’s that honesty—that willingness to say, “This was hard, and this hurt”—that makes her resilience so inspiring.

What resonates most with me during this current season of my life is her perspective on change. She says she isn’t trying to “get back” to her old life but is instead creating a “new track” forever. That hits home when you’re navigating your own transition. She reminds us that we are constantly evolving.

Watching her sit in those small community circles with young people, looking them right in the eye and telling them their stories matter… it’s a lesson in true influence. It’s not about the 34-city arena tour or the celebrity moderators like Oprah and Stephen Colbert. It’s about the connection.

If you’re in a season of transition, or if you just need to be reminded of the power of your own story, go watch it again. It’s emotional, it’s uplifting, and for this South Side girl, it’s a reminder that we are always, always becoming.
