Then he brought them to the man to see what he would call them. Whatever the man called each creature became its name. So the man named all the domestic animals, all the birds, and all the wild animals. But the man found no helper who was right for him. So the Lord God caused him to fall into a deep sleep. While the man was sleeping, the Lord God took out one of the man’s ribs and closed up the flesh at that place. Then the Lord God formed a woman from the rib that he had taken from the man. He brought her to the man. The man said, This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh. She will be named woman because she was taken from man. That is why a man will leave his father and mother and will be united with his wife, and they will become one flesh. The man and his wife were both naked, but they weren’t ashamed of it.” – Genesis 2:18–25
Praying and declaring God’s Word over my marriage is one of the greatest gifts I can give my husband and our daughters. Here is one of the prayers I pray over my marriage.
Dear Father,
Your Word teaches us that there are two commandments that should shape every marriage. The first is to love You with all our heart and the second is to love each other as we love ourselves.
These commandments are not always perfectly lived by us. Not only do we let ourselves down–we let down each other. We yearn to be the perfect couple we imagined we would be. However, we fall short.
Nevertheless, Your Son, Jesus Christ imparted righteousness on us. Your love is unshakable–Your grace marvelous. Thank You, Lord for holding our marriage in Your hand while forming and molding us after Your will.
With Your grace and strength, we’re growing, and learning to love. Thank You for that guiding us each and every day. Thank You for not allowing us to give up on ourselves, for You have not given up on us.
Show us how to continue to work by Your side. Relax our hearts and expand our minds so that we may love You with every part of our being, and lastly father give us the power and the wisdom to love each other as we do ourselves.
In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.
“So love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ 31 The second most important commandment is this: ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.” – Mark 12:30-31
