7 Unusual Causes Of Regular Headaches

Sharing is caring!

Headaches can be caused by all kinds of things. If you’ve been getting frequent headaches for a while, it’s likely it’s not a cold or the flu. A few common causes of frequent headaches include:

  • Stress
  • Dehydration
  • Lack of sleep
  • Eye strain (from looking at bright screens for too long)
  • Head injury

It’s worth always looking into these common causes first. If none of these seem to be the cause, it could be something a little more unusual. Below are just a few unusual causes of headaches and how to treat them.

Subluxation

Subluxation occurs when one of the vertebrae in our spine moves out of position. This could be the result of an injury or even poor posture. The subluxation can lead to various pains around the body including intense headaches. Chiropractors can often treat this pain by putting the vertebrae back into place through careful joint manipulation. Consider booking an appointment with a chiropractor to see if this helps.

Caffeine withdrawal

If you drink caffeine at the same time every day, you could find that skipping your coffee one day leads to a headache. This is believed to be the main cause behind ‘the weekend migraine’ – some people get an intense headache when they lie in on a Saturday, often because they’re not having their morning coffee at the same time. You can find out more here about treating caffeine withdrawal headaches

Barometric pressure changes

Changes in weather can cause some people to develop serious migraines. This is believed to be the result of barometric pressure changes. Such headaches can be extremely irritating as they’re often out of our control. The best thing you can do is to use a barometric pressure forecast app to plan ahead for weather changes. Finding a job you’re able to work flexibly could help you to cope.

Perfume

Some migraine sufferers are triggered by certain scents. These tend to be chemical scents such as gasoline and paint. Perfume/aftershave is a particularly common scent trigger – if you notice that you tend to get migraines while wearing certain perfumes, it could be worth staying away from these perfumes. Some people find it easier to cut out all perfumes.

Chinese food

Do you get a headache after eating a Chinese takeout? It could be due to an ingredient called MSG (monosodium glutamate), which is a common migraine trigger. MSG is found most commonly in soy sauce (which is why many people are triggered by Chinese food). Processed meats like hot dogs and beef jerky also sometimes have MSG added to them.

Orgasms

Sex headaches are rarely talked about, but they are in fact a common type of headache – particularly among men. They typically last a few minutes but can last longer for some people. If you regularly experience a severe migraine after sex, you may want to see a doctor and discuss pain relief options. You can find out more here about sex headaches

Medication overdose

It’s important to stick to recommended doses of medication. Headaches are one of the most common symptoms of medication overdose. Ironically, painkillers are one of the most common types of medication to cause a headache if you take too many.
