Are you worried about the summer drought as a parent? This refers to the summer months where your kids won’t be focused on learning at all. It can lead to them returning to school after forgetting all about what they were learning about in the previous term. This is a problem as it can mean that for at least the first few weeks after your child returns to school they are behind. So, how can you avoid this type of situation? Here are some of the key possibilities that we recommend you explore.
Summer Camp
First, you might want to think about sending your child to a summer camp for at least part of the time when they are off school. Summer camp isn’t just an option that can be educational for kids. It can also be great fun and help them develop their social skills while learning a wide range of different tasks. Summer camps can be arranged by the school or they might be privately set up by local organizations. It’s worth researching all the different options here.
Summer camps can have different themes. For instance, there are math camps, science camps, space camps, and adventure camps. As such, it’s worth exploring the activities that your child is interested in. Or, alternatively, you can think about sending them to a camp where they can develop skills in a subject where they might be falling short.
You just need to make sure that you are checking the reviews and referrals of different summer camps that you might be considering. They don’t all provide the same high quality experience that you might expect. So, it is important to conduct your own independent research here.
Daily Activities
Next, you should think about the daily activities that kids can complete to ensure that they are keeping their mind’s active throughout the summer months. For instance, you might want to encourage them to write a diary or a journal. This is particularly useful if you are planning a trip away. Don’t forget, it’s also common for the first assignment when kids get back to school to be writing about what they did through the summer holidays. As such, giving them a home assignment like this can ensure that they are already ahead when they return after vacation.
This is just one of the daily activities that you might want to think about encouraging. You can also explore options like encouraging your child to read a book or part of a book each day. You can determine how much they should be reading based on their ability and their age. Don’t forget, it’s not enough just to get them to read the book. You need to make sure that they are absorbing the information. To do this, make sure that you do think about discussing it with them and asking about their opinions on different themes or characters.
Educational Trips
You could also consider arranging an educational trip for your child over the summer months. Educational trips can be a great way to break up the summer drought if you don’t have any vacations planned. As well as this, it can also be incredibly useful for your child in a variety of different ways. One option would be to take your child to a museum. There are lots of museums that are perfect for children and essentially designed for high levels of engagement. As such, it’s worth researching possibilities like this to find the right choice for your child.
You could also think about exploring going to an art gallery. Even if your child isn’t particularly interested in art, taking them to an art gallery can inspire them to be more creative and pursue their own projects. This is always going to be a huge bonus.
Even places like Disney World have elements that are educational for children. Epcot is largely designed around education. You can use it to teach kids a lot about the past, future and present of the world. It’s a wonderful place to visit and suitable for children of all ages.
Homework Assignments
Another option would be to set homework assignments for your children similar to the work that they would be completing through the school term. The benefit of this is that the assignments will be more related to what children are learning in school. As such, they can provide a greater range of benefits and ensure that your children are still focused on studying, even through the summer break.
You might think it’s overskill to set homework assignments. However, it’s easy to forget just how long the summer vacation is. Teachers often complain that when kids return from summer vacations, they are like blank slates. This means that a lot of time and effort needs to be spent on playing catch up. If you provide a little homework through the summer months, then you should be able to avoid this situation completely.
You can access homework worksheets online that will be perfect for this. These are typically based around the information that kids will be learning at school. As such, you can guarantee that your child is focused on the right information over the summer break. You can also find homework documents online that are specifically designed for your child’s level of learning or year group.
Learning And Lifestyle
You can also think about ensuring that learning is a key element of your child’s lifestyle through the summer months. There are lots of ways that you can do this. For instance, if you have a young child, then you might be providing them with pocket money or an allowance. If that’s the case, then it’s worth encouraging them to work out how much they have to spend and what they will be able to buy. This is a great way to build up their skills in math. If you have older children, you might want to think about encouraging them to get a job over the summer.
Creative Activities
You might also want to encourage your child to explore a wide range of different creative activities. These can be completely independently or under your guidance. For instance, if you have younger children, then you might want to set up a space where they can explore options like paper mache or painting. This can be quite messy so the best option is to let them explore this in an area like the kitchen where it will be easier to clean up.
If you have older children, then you might want to think about encouraging them to cook in the kitchen. Getting your kids interested and involved in cooking is a great way to ensure that they do learn and develop a skill that is going to serve them well later in their life. You just need to make sure that you set up the kitchen so that it is safe for your kids to use. There are both small and larger changes worth considering here. For instance, you want to ensure that your kitchen space is safer, then you could install a heat induction hob. This will only heat up the surface of the pan or pot that is being used. This can reduce the chance of burns.
Online Learning
Another way you can ensure that you keep your kids engaged and thinking through the summer months is with online learning. Online learning probably isn’t a new experience for your children. After all, this was an option that was largely relied upon during the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic. As such, you might already be aware of some of the resources that could be useful or relevant for your kids. There are resources available for virtually every lesson and subject that you might be interested in your child focusing on.
Remember, it’s best to focus specifically on subjects that they are weaker on. There’s very little point spending the summer helping your child brush up on subjects that they already excel in.
There are lots of sites online that list the best online resources for kids to use to keep their learning on the right track. It’s always going to be worth exploring these possibilities yourself.
You might also want to think about encouraging your children to play games through the summer too online. Various studies show that certain games can keep a child’s mind active and ensure that their cognitive skills improve overtime.
We hope this helps you understand some of the key steps that you can take to ensure that your kid’s brain does remain switched on and active over the summer months. In doing so, you can ensure that they are not going to be back to square one once the summer vacation ends. Instead, they will be ready to go and prepared in a variety of different subjects. Don’t forget, children often spend a lot of time doing nothing through the summer months and by the end tend to be quite bored. So, this doesn’t mean you will be taking time away that they could be spending with their friends or enjoying their favorite activities.
