11 Simple Ways I’ve Decuttered My Life (and Kept My Peace)

Sharing is caring!

Let’s be real for a minute.

A few years back, I woke up one morning and realized I was completely overwhelmed by… well, everything. My calendar was packed to the brim, my living room felt cluttered, my inbox was sitting at some terrifying four-digit number, and my brain constantly felt like I had 47 browser tabs open all at once.

Have you ever felt like that? Like you’re constantly running, but somehow never actually getting anywhere?

I used to think that living a full life meant keeping my hands full. But over time, I realized that true peace doesn’t come from doing it all… it comes from curating what actually deserves a spot in your day.

Simplifying wasn’t something that happened overnight for me. It was a slow, intentional process of dropping things that drained me and keeping things that brought clarity. If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed lately and want to breathe a bit easier, here are 11 ways I’ve simplified my life over the years.

1. I Own Less Stuff (and Love My Home So Much More)

I used to think decluttering was just about organized closets. But honestly? The less stuff you own, the less time you spend cleaning, organizing, and looking for lost keys! Getting rid of excess clutter gave our home room to breathe. Now, our living space feels like a calm sanctuary instead of a giant to-do list.

2. I Say “No” More Often to Protect My Time and Energy

Saying no used to give me so much guilt. But every time you say yes to something that drains you, you’re saying no to your own peace. Protecting my calendar isn’t selfish… it’s necessary. Now, if it isn’t a clear, peaceful yes, it’s a gentle no.

3. I Keep a Capsule Wardrobe That Makes Getting Dressed Easy

Remember staring at a closet full of clothes and feeling like you had absolutely nothing to wear? Yeah, I don’t miss those days. Streamlining my wardrobe into simple, versatile pieces that I actually love wearing turned my morning routine from a daily stress test into a 5-minute breeze.

4. I Repeat Simple, Healthy Meals

Meal planning used to feel like a full-time production. Now, I stick to a handful of simple, high-protein go-to recipes that take zero brainpower to throw together. Having a few trusted, nourishing rotation meals saves time, money, and that exhausting 5 PM “what’s for dinner?” panic.

5. I Delete or Limit Apps That Drain My Attention

Social media and phone apps are designed to keep us scrolling endlessly. I started auditing my phone every few months and wiping out anything that felt like a digital time-sink. Setting strict daily time limits on social media brought back hours of my afternoon that I didn’t even realize I was losing.

6. I Use One Single Calendar to Keep Everything in One Place

Sticky notes on the counter, mental reminders, three different digital apps… it was a recipe for missed appointments. Now, everything goes into one master calendar. If it isn’t on the calendar, it simply doesn’t exist! Having one single source of truth cleared up so much mental bandwidth.

7. I Automate Bills and Simplify My Financial Life

Setting up automatic payments and streamlining monthly subscriptions was one of the single best adulting decisions I’ve ever made. Not having to track half a dozen due dates every month eliminates unnecessary friction and keeps our household running smoothly behind the scenes.

8. I Buy Fewer Things, But Better Ones That Last

Quality over quantity changes everything. Instead of buying cheap items that break after a few months, I shifted toward investing in well-made pieces that stand the test of time. It saves money in the long run and keeps low-quality clutter out of the house.

9. I Walk Every Day for My Body and My Mind

Getting outside for a daily walk has become a non-negotiable part of my morning routine. Whether I’m tuning into a favorite podcast or just listening to the breeze, walking clears out mental cobwebs better than anything else I’ve found. It isn’t just exercise… it’s mental maintenance.

10. I Set Boundaries With My Phone and Protect My Focus

Your phone should be a tool that serves you, not a master that demands your attention every two seconds. Keeping notifications silenced during work hours and leaving my phone out of reach during family time brought a level of presence and focus I hadn’t felt in years.

11. I Let Go of Perfectionism and Choose Progress Instead

This was probably the hardest shift of all. Perfectionism is just fear in a fancy outfit! Waiting until conditions are perfect or until you have it all figured out will keep you stuck forever. Nowadays, I celebrate small steps forward and let “good enough” be good enough.

The Goal Isn’t Less Life, It’s More Meaning

Simplifying your life isn’t about cutting out everything you love or living in a completely empty room. It’s about stripping away the extra noise so you can actually enjoy the good stuff.

Start small. Pick just one area where you’re feeling friction today… maybe it’s your morning phone habit, or maybe it’s that overflowing kitchen drawer… and give yourself permission to loosen your grip. You’ll be amazed at how much lighter you feel.
