Raising Kind Kids

Sharing is caring!

There is a saying or meme that you may have seen going around on social media, that says, in a world where you can be anything, be kind. And while we do live in a time where we have so much more freedom and freedom of expression, as well as more equal rights, we can be anything we want to be and do anything we want to do. But how many of us have ‘kind’ on our agenda? As parents, it is so important to make sure that we are raising kind children. Goodness knows we need more of it in the world.

But how can we instill a kind heart in our children? Here are some ideas to think about as you’re raising your little ones.

Make Caring For Others a Focus in Your Life

Kids are smart and they catch onto things if you aren’t following through with what you’re saying. Take being online or using an iPad, for example. If we say to our kids that their time should be limited each day, then shouldn’t ours be too? The same goes for showing care, kindness, and compassion for others. Do you make it a priority in your life already? Are you talking to your children about how you could help your neighbor that has had a fall, or the mom from school with a new baby? When you make it part of your life, it will make it part of the lives of your children too.

Volunteer as a Family

Being able to volunteer as a family is a great way to show kindness for others, and show how you can help others and be less selfish. Being an example of that and looking for volunteer opportunities in your local community is a great thing to do. However, there are plenty of other things that you could be doing as a family. There may be organized projects that you can join in with, as well as creating your own service projects that will benefit your local area.

Express Gratitude

Being a kind person means that you take time for others, share, and are looking for ways to help others. When our children can learn about gratitude and being thankful, it really does make a difference to how they see things. They are going to be kinder people when they appreciate all that has gone into someone preparing a meal for them or teaching them a lesson at school. They are going to be kinder when they are thankful for those kinds of efforts. So making gratitude and time to give thanks part of your daily life is important. It could be to simply list a few things they are thankful for that day, for example.

Talk About Feelings

Of course, a lot of this can be easier said than done. There will be plenty of times when we ourselves are unkind, as well as our children. Talk about how they feel about things, and discuss destructive behavior and how they can overcome and deal with it. Then when they face a situation that makes them angry, they will be better equipped to deal with it in a kinder way.

Do you have any tips to teach kindness to children? What habits did your parents instill in you? Please share in the comments below. I really would love to know.

Until next time, shine amongst the stars!

  1. Some great tips here, I have a 2 and 4 year old and we’ve been saying how we would like to volunteer as a family for some time now. What kind of activity would you suggest?

  2. Being from the south, manners are instilled in us at a very young age. My four year old daughter has been saying “Yes Mam”, “No Mam”, “Please” and “Thank You” since she started talking!

  3. This is one of my biggest fears in deciding to have kids or not. I see so many entitled, spoiled kids and I don’t want to put another one in the world. I’ve considered making sure to have them open up and be sensitive and empathetic, but then I’m scared I’ll go overboard and make them weak and too emotional. Such a scary, delicate balance.
