Being a stay-at-home mom, you never have a truly free moment. Even when you are resting for a bit, you may be folding laundry while you watch TV, sitting for a moment while food is cooking, or taking a quick nap to catch up on the sleep that you missed staying up late taking care of sick kids the night before. Though people used to take the work stay-at-home parents do in a day for granted, it’s now a known fact that being a stay-at-home parent is several jobs in one.

That said, staying at home to take care of kids doesn’t mean that you can’t take advantage of other opportunities, such as online college classes or remote work. Even personal projects can take hours, days, or weeks to complete, proving just how dedicated and hardworking all parents are. If you’re a stay-at-home mom looking for extra opportunities to fit in your schedule, you have many options.

Online Education

Taking care of your kids is truly a fulfilling job. However, kids eventually grow up, and you don’t want to be left not knowing what to do as they gain their independence. By taking online classes at a university, you can keep your mind stimulated, expand your knowledge, and prepare yourself to enter the professional world in the future.

Online higher education options offer flexibility and affordability, making your education work for your current lifestyle. You can choose your workload and take as many classes as you can handle while still being able to keep up with your other daily tasks. For example, you can take classes in an MBA program, which can make you an ideal candidate when you are ready to join the workforce and won’t leave a void in your resume during your child-raising years.

According to Diane Trimble, former online student at Arizona State University, going from model mom to model student wasn’t the easiest transition. However, it did help her become a better role model for her kids, and that was worth it.

Trimble says, “In my case, you have to be able to balance out what percentage you’re going to focus on work, school and family — all three are important. I also believe you need to have an outlet you can vent to, whether that’s a teacher, spouse or friend. They’ll help you think outside the box.”

Working From Home

If you already have a degree or you just need some extra cash flow for your house, there are alternative options to the traditional office job that can work for you. Working from home is becoming more and more popular as employees are able to easily complete tasks online and in the comfort of their own home. Whether you need a bit more cash for your family or you miss working in a professional environment, getting an online job can be exactly what you need.

Working from home might seem a bit scary at first. It can be hard to distinguish a scam from a job that you can enjoy and do well. However, there are plenty of legitimate jobs out there, and looking for one can help you provide your family with some extra money.

Blogging is one of the most popular online jobs out there. Creating, writing for, and maintaining a blog can be a lot of work, but it can also be very rewarding. Not only do you choose what you want your blog to look like and what you want to write about, but you can be your own boss and completely set your own schedule. Be sure to research what it takes to have a blog before you get started and set a routine to keep you on track.

Personal Projects

Sometimes, people wrongly give stay-at-home parents flack for their personal projects. What may seem to others like a silly arts and crafts project can really be a useful home item or beautiful home decoration. Sometimes, personal projects are the hobbies parents need to stay sane while taking care of kids all day, so be proud of any and all projects you undertake.

In fact, you can even take your personal projects and turn them into a job — if you have the time and desire to do so. For example, if you like designing, you can buy used furniture, flip it, and sell it online. Facebook market it a great and easy way to do this, though you can also use Etsy, Ebay, and other online selling platforms.

Of course, your hobby can simply be a hobby and doesn’t need to be a source of income. Perhaps some of your projects you take on are for family members. For example, if you want to show your parents that you appreciate them, you can help them digitize their photos; a task that may be easy enough for you, but potentially a hassle for them. Whether this is a general appreciation gift or a holiday present, it’s a task that will keep a busy mom even busier.

Every stay-at-home parent’s day is going to look a little different. Depending on the size of your family, if you have family members to help you watch the kids sometimes, as well as many other factors, your day will be unique and challenging in its own way.
