If you have a backyard, it’s highly likely that you are going to find animals frequenting the space. This isn’t all too surprising. After all, we build our homes on land that would have previously been these animal’s homes and who can blame them for wanting to adapt and attempt to live near us in harmony? However, there are various reasons that you might not want your outdoor space to be rife with wildlife. You might have a fear or phobia of certain animals. They might be damaging your plants or eating vegetables that you have planted. There might be animal waste lying around and you don’t really want your little ones or pets poking around at it. Whatever your reason, it’s extremely important to be kind, thoughtful, and humane when dealing with these creatures. At the end of the day, they are sentient. They feel pain and they have emotion. So, what can you do to encourage them to move on? Here are a few tips and tricks to try out!
Removing Dead Animals
If you find that there is a dead animal in your garden, it’s generally best to avoid touching it yourself. You don’t know what it might have died from, and chances are you’d rather not come into contact with a creature that could have a disease. Call in Pest Control who will be able to remove the animal on your behalf. If you have pets, avoid letting them out into your yard until the deceased creature has been removed.
Remember That You Can’t Pick and Choose
If you leave food out for one species of animal, you’ll find that various different creatures will turn up. Some could be quite unexpected. But you need to understand that any animal is going to make a beeline for free and easily accessible food. You can’t pick and choose which animals you want to feed. You can’t feed the birds and expect rats or squirrels to stay away. You can’t decide you want to feed robins but not pigeons. So, you need to make a decision – do you want to provide for any animal who happens to pass by or do you want to have your space free of animals altogether? If you choose the first, you’ll have to learn to live side by side with all creatures. If you choose the second, take active steps to avoid leaving any food out in your garden space. If there’s no food, animals will generally steer clear – they don’t generally want to get anywhere near humans unless there is a nutritional reward at the end of the tunnel.
Securing Borders
Animals can squeeze through surprisingly tiny gaps. So, make sure to check around the borders of your garden and ensure all fences are intact without cracks or spaces between panels. This will make it harder for animals to access your yard.
So, there you have it. If you’re not quite so much an animal person as others may be, there are simple and fair steps that you can take towards minimizing the amount of wildlife in your backyard!
