The 5 Best Paint Categories You Should Know About

Sharing is caring!

When renovating your house, you will always use the best quality paint. Be it the normal primer coating or the door and window paints, you need to be cautious and informed while choosing one.

Before you choose a product for house painting, you need to know the types of paints available in the market. This will help you understand their properties, areas of application, and what makes them different from other types.

However, with so many options available in the market, getting acquainted with each type is not easy and will require both time and effort. To help you make an informed decision, we have listed the most popular paint types you can find in the market along with the area of application, and a basic overview of the process.

Primer paints

Primer paints are generally white, however, there are other color options available. They act as a base coat when painting a surface. Applying it to the walls will seal the cracks and make the surfaces even. When repainting a wall, you first have chipped the old paint. After that, sandpapers are used to remove the debris and dust from the wall. Primer is then applied with an even coating so as to seal the surfaces and prepare them for actual house painting.

Interior and exterior paints

This particular category of paint is based on the area of application. Interior paints are basically applied on any surface that won’t be in direct contact with the outside atmosphere, unlike the exterior paint. When compared based on endurance, the exterior paints perform way better.

Since the exterior paint is exposed to multiple weathering factors, it has a high endurance level to ensure the colors don’t fade over time. Interior paints, on the other hand, are soft and smooth. They aren’t exposed to the weathering factors. Hence, these house painting products don’t usually lose their beauty over time.

Oil and Water-based paints

You can also categorize the paints based on the solvent used for dissolving and mixing the pigments. The oil-based pigments are prepared by dissolving the pigments in a suitable carrier oil which is usually organic in nature. These paints are applied to furniture, doors, windows, steel, and iron surfaces.

When the pigments are mixed with water, the paints are known as Water-based. These are applied on the walls during house painting. These paints can be matte or glossy based on the nature of the pigment. Water-based paints dry much quicker when compared to oil-based paints, a factor you must consider when making a choice.

Weather-proof paints

These are a special category of exterior paints which can resist rain and snow easily. They come with a plastic coating which enables the paint to resist absorption of water, thus keeping the walls dry. They are also resistant to the UV rays from the sun. If you choose normal exterior paints, they will fade over the course of time, due to the sun’s radiations. But the weatherproof paints will remain intact and retain their beauty, no matter how diverse the weather is.

Matte and glossy paints

This is one of the most popular categories of paint used for house painting. The matte colors will have no shine or luster but will be bolder and much intense in terms of hue. Matte paints are usually applied on larger walls which need to be covered with a darker or bolder shade.

Glossier paints have a luster due to glimmering pigments. When light reflects from these walls, the paint will shine subtly, adding beauty to the interiors. It is recommended to apply the glossy paints only on small areas since they can cause a huge distraction if applied on larger walls, and not in a good way.

Conclusion

Since you now know the common types of paints used in house painting, you wouldn’t face any more problems in choosing the best quality product. Just make sure the colors you choose complement the surroundings and enhances the aesthetics.
