Bad habits – we all have them, and some of them are detrimental to our health and wellbeing. While they can be notoriously difficult to break, especially when they have become entrenched in our usual routine, it is possible to find healthier alternatives that will better our lifestyle, and go some way towards kicking those bad habits for good.
Here are some examples.
Bad Habit #1: Spending too long in bed. What’s wrong with spending a little longer in bed, you might ask? Other than putting yourself in danger of being late for work, there are also health problems associated with that extra slumber. You will throw your sleep pattern out of whack too, so while the occasional lie in is okay when you need it, this is still one habit that you need to wake up from if you want to have a more productive routine.
Alternative: It’s simple really! Go to bed at a decent hour, and then get up earlier in the morning. You will feel more refreshed if you do, and your morning can be put to better use – go for a walk, have a healthy breakfast, do the housework, actually make it to work on time, etc. Use our simple hacks to transform you into a morning person!
Bad Habit #2: Smoking! You won’t be surprised to find this on the list; it’s one of the worst habits of them all. Aside from the fact that your breath and clothes will stink from the nicotine you are inhaling, you are also putting your life in jeopardy, with the risk of heart disease and lung cancer. Oh, and you are also aging your face every time you take a puff of a cigarette, so you have plenty of incentive to pack in the habit.
Alternative: You won’t be surprised to know of the alternative we are about to suggest. Vaping! While the jury is still out on whether vaping is good for you, aside from the exploding e-cig scandal, it is still recognized as a healthier alternative to regular cigarettes. If you have struggled to give up smoking through the usual methods – distraction techniques, nicotine patches – then you owe it to yourself to give it a try. You can buy vaping equipment and acquire free ejuice samples online, so after doing your own research on the perceived health risks attached, weigh up the viability of this alternative to smoking.
Bad Habit #3: Spending all of your free time in front of the TV. Sure, we get it. We are apparently living in the golden age of television (again) and there is a ton of stuff to watch. And with Netflix, Hulu and all of the other streaming services begging for our attention, it can be easy to binge watch popular television series and never leave our armchairs again. However, this has all of the expected health consequences. While your eyes probably won’t go square (no matter what your parents told you), you are still at risk of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, because of your sedentary lifestyle.
Alternative: Set yourself a time to catch up on all of your TV binge-watching, and fill some of your time doing something else. Go outside and exercise, visit friends, talk to your kids, read a book, hit the gym, stroll around your garden or anything else that will get your blood pumping, improve your cognitive abilities, and/ or give you the chance to socialize with others. You will feel better for it, in so many ways.
