If you thought you knew all that there is to know about your eyes, then you’re in for a shock. These wacky facts about your peepers will come as a revelation. Seeing IS believing, after all.
All People With Blue Eyes Have The Same Ancestor
If you and your partner have blue eyes, then here’s some news that you don’t want to hear – you’re related!
Okay, the link is probably only very slight and goes back hundreds of generations, but you still share an ancestor in your ancient past. Researchers believe that blue eyes are a chance mutation that occurred in ancient human populations living in the northern hemisphere thousands of years ago. Before that, everyone had brown eyes. No exceptions!
Your Eyes See Everything Upside Down
If you’ve ever looked in a bowl-shaped mirror, you’ll have noticed something – everything is upside down. Interestingly, the lenses in our eyes are this shape, too, so the same phenomenon is at play. Light comes through inverted, meaning that the image that hits the retina is the wrong way around. Woah – that’s creepy.
We don’t see everything upside down, though. Fortunately, our brains are adept at dealing with the problem. With a bit of clever processing, they flip the image so that it appears the right way up without any conscious effort.
The Length Of Your Eye Determines Your Near And Far-Sightedness
Here’s the sort of fact you’d learn somewhere like Vision Magazine: the length of your eyeball determine whether you are long-sighted or short-sighted. The reason for this comes down to how the lens focuses the incoming light on your retina. If the distance between the lens is too short or long, then it can make both near and far images look fuzzy. Spectacles adjust the incoming light so that it refocuses light on the retina in the right way.
We’re not talking vast differences in the length of people’s eyeballs, either. Just a millimeter or two is enough to massive alter how people perceive the world.
Some People Are Afraid Of Eyes
Can you imagine being afraid of your eyes? Well, if you’re a person with ommetaphobia, you don’t have to imagine – it’s real.
For some people, the eyes are a source of great consternation. They worry about touching them or damaging them in any way. They also fear other people’s eyes and what might happen to them during injury or surgery. Probably best not to think about it!
People With Sight Loss Can Still See In Their Dreams
Sight loss is a common condition where people have significantly reduced visibility, either from birth or as a result of an accident or medical problem. Interestingly, though, many of these individuals can still see images in their mind’s eye when they sleep. Bizarrely, this phenomenon occurs for people who haven’t been able to see from birth, begging the question of what it is that they DO see when they dream. It’s an extraordinary concept when you think about it.
So there you have it: some wacky facts you never knew about your eyes.
