Hey friends! We’ve all been there, right? You get this huge burst of motivation. You decide you’re going to start a new workout routine, cook every meal at home, or get up early every day. For a week or two, it’s amazing. You feel energized, unstoppable even. And then… life happens. The motivation fades, and you’re right back where you started.
For a long time, I thought I was just doing it wrong. I thought I needed to find a bigger “why” or just be more motivated. But a few months ago, when I was doing my 10K before 10PM challenge, I learned a powerful secret: motivation is a liar. It comes and goes, and you can’t build a strong life on something so unreliable.

The Lie of Motivation vs. The Power of Discipline
Every single evening during that challenge, my bed looked extra cozy. My body felt tired. My mind was loud with a million reasons to just say, “I’ll do it tomorrow.” If I had relied on motivation, I would have quit on Day 3.
But I didn’t. I had a promise to keep. My daily 10K wasn’t about an inspired burst of energy; it was about discipline.
Discipline is what happens when motivation is gone. It’s the quiet, steady decision to just go anyway. It’s the habit that says, “I’m doing this because I said I would,” not because you feel like it. And that’s what truly gets you to the finish line.

How to Build a Habit That Lasts
So how do you build that kind of muscle?
- Celebrate showing up. Not every day will feel good. That’s okay. Winning isn’t about ease—it’s about consistency. I celebrated every 10K not because it felt amazing, but because I kept my promise to myself.
- Make your plan non-negotiable. Treat it like an appointment you can’t cancel. My steps were set in stone. If I did some in the morning, I knew I’d finish the rest later. Simple, but powerful.
- Just start. Don’t wait for motivation to strike. Take one step. Then another. The power is in small, consistent action.
This mindset shift has changed everything for me. It’s helping me build the consistency I need in my health, creativity, and life. It’s about daily trust, not fleeting inspiration.
So now I’ll leave you with this—what’s one area where you want to rely less on motivation and more on discipline?

This was like a gentle smack in the face (in the best way). I keep thinking I’m lazy but I think I’ve just been relying on motivation too much. Thank you for saying what needed to be said. Sharing this with my group chat ASAP.
I started reading this with a snack and ended it with a to-do list 😂 This was the right message at the right time. I’ve got too many half-finished goals. Time to change that up.
This post made me sit up a little straighter, not gonna lie. I’ve been trying to build a routine and keep sliding back into old habits. Your line about keeping promises to yourself really stuck with me. Definitely saving this.
I bookmarked this halfway through because I knew I’d be coming back to it. You really said “motivation is a liar” and I felt that in my soul. I’ve been quitting on myself too easy. That stops today
Devon! Yesss 🔥 That shift from “quitting” to “showing up anyway” changes everything. I’m so proud of you for claiming that for yourself. Let’s goooo! 💥👏
I really needed this. I’ve been depending on motivation forever and keep wondering why I fall off every few weeks. You broke it down in such a real way. Definitely rethinking how I move now.
Carlos, I feel this sooo deeply 💯 Motivation’s sneaky like that — here one minute, gone the next. I’m glad the post helped shift something for you. You’ve got everything it takes — one consistent step at a time! 💪✨
