If you’re like most people, your home is your most valuable asset. It’s your nest egg – the thing that’s going to see you through retirement.
For this reason, it’s important that you look after it. However, sometimes laziness can creep in. Deep down you want to maintain your home, but for whatever reason, you can’t actually bring yourself to do it.
In this post, we take a look at some of the home issues that you simply can’t afford to put off. If you do, you’ll wind up creating much bigger problems for yourself (and far more expensive).
A Toilet That Won’t Stop Running
A toilet that won’t stop running isn’t just annoying, it also wastes a lot of water. Imagine running a tap all day for no reason: that’s essentially what’s happening when your lavatory is broken.
Running toilets can be annoyingly loud as well, so they’re well worth fixing as soon as you can. If you don’t want to solve the problem yourself, then you can always ask a professional to do it for you. There are many guides online for fixing toilet problems; just make sure that you have the right parts.
If you notice peeling caulk anywhere in your home, fix it immediately. Caulk creates a watertight barrier between fittings and the surrounding material. If it is damaged, cracked, or broken, then it can’t do its job effectively.
Remember, caulk has a finite lifetime. What’s more, surrounding conditions can affect it. Exposure to excessive moisture in the bathroom, for instance, can shorten how long it remains functional, particularly if it attracts mold.
When I had termites, I immediately phoned pest control near me. Why? Because termites can cause serious structural damage to your home.
This species of insect is able to metabolize wood, so if they get into your home’s joists, they can create immeasurable damage over time. The more damage they create, the worse off your home will be.
Fixing the problem is easy and, generally speaking, safe as well. The basic idea is to treat the affected wood and then seal up any entrances to your home to prevent the termites from returning in the future.
Clogged gutters might not seem like much of a problem, but they are. Your home needs functional gutters to transport water from the roof to the storm drains around your home. If this process doesn’t happen, then the water accumulates around the base of the house, infiltrating the masonry and foundations, leading to structural weakness.
Fortunately, clearing out your gutters is something that you can do yourself if you have an appropriate ladder. You can also hire a handyman in your local area to do it for you if you want.
Rotting Window Frames And Deck
Outside-facing wooden elements are prone to rot. As soon as you notice a problem, you’ll need to fix it. If you don’t, then it will continue to worsen over time and you’ll have a much more expensive repair bill to pay.
Generally, you want to treat wooden elements once a year if they are outside with high-quality protection.
