There are some skills that could help you to literally save a life one day – whether it’s your own life or someone else’s. These are skills that everyone can benefit from learning. Below are five examples and how to learn them.

CPR
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can help to save someone’s life if they are experiencing a cardiac arrest. This is when the heart stops and a person falls unconscious. CPR involves using chest compressions and assisted breathing to help keep a person alive until paramedics arrive (at which point a defibrillator can be used). There are courses that can teach you how to perform CPR, as well as provide certification. In fact, you can learn how to perform CPR and take your test now online.

The Heimlich Maneuver
More formally known as abdominal thrusts, the Heimlich maneuver is a life-saving technique used to help someone who is choking. Abdominal thrusts are used to dislodge a foreign object from a person’s windpipe. Back blows may be used first, which involves hitting the palm repeatedly on the back. There are first aid courses that can teach you how to perform the Heimlich maneuver. You can also watch videos online.

Bleeding control
If someone is heavy bleeding, it could be essential that you know how to stop this bleeding. Bandages and tourniquets are two popular methods used to control bleeding. There are courses that can teach you how to apply these, however, you may be able to learn the basics by reading up information online. Having first aid supplies can be useful when controlling bleeding, however, there are ways to control bleeding if such supplies aren’t available.

Water Rescue
Water rescue training could teach you how to rescue someone that is drowning. This could involve learning swimming techniques to get to someone and swim with them. Such a skill could be useful if you work by or on the water. When it comes to rescuing people from the sea, educating yourself on how to deal with riptides could be important – swimming in such waters can be very dangerous and there are specific skills required to escape a rip tide.
Self-defense
If you are attacked by someone, knowing how to defend yourself could be a vital skill to have. Self-defense can teach you how to safely get out of situations where you may be getting assaulted. Many people take up martial arts to learn self-defense, however you can also take up general self-defense classes. You can also find many self-defense tips online – including tips on how to deal with specific circumstances like animal attacks or sexual assault.

These are all super important and potentially lifesaving skills to have. It’s reminded me that I really need to take a new first aid course x
I recall learning the heimlech and CPR in high school, but the rest should be mandatory things to learn at a young age. I especially think bleeding control and self defense is super important.
I have often thought about taking a CPR course. Maybe it is time. Thanks also for the other suggestions.
These are some good skills we all should learn. Self defence is really important skill which we all should learn or know.
Great post. These are skills that we all need to have, and if we don’t, we need to make every effort to learn them. Saving a life is a tremendous accomplishment.
