Things I’m Learning About Marriage: It’s the Little Things

Sharing is caring!

Hello, friends! Lavanda Michelle here. Today, I’d like to open up about marriage—a journey that’s as beautiful as it is challenging. My husband and I have been together for over 20 years, and when I first stepped into this partnership, I had so many ideas about what love and marriage would look like. Some of those ideas were spot on, but many have evolved over the years as I’ve learned, grown, and discovered new depths in this incredible bond.

Marriage, I’m discovering, isn’t just about the big moments—it’s about all the little things we do for each other, day after day. It’s about choosing to love, even when it’s not easy, and finding joy in the journey, even when life gets a little bumpy. Here are a few lessons I’m learning along the way.

1. Choosing Love Every Day

I used to think love was a feeling that would always be there, like a permanent spark. But I’ve learned that love is a choice we make daily. Choosing love means being patient, showing kindness, and being there for each other in the small, everyday moments. There’s a beautiful simplicity in waking up each morning and deciding to love your partner anew.

2. Embracing Imperfection

In a world full of “perfect” couples on social media, it’s easy to feel like something’s wrong if everything isn’t picture-perfect. But real life? It’s beautifully imperfect. Learning to embrace both our own and each other’s flaws has been one of the most freeing parts of marriage. We’re both works in progress, and that’s okay. Growth takes time, and sometimes the imperfections make the journey even more meaningful.

3. Prioritizing Quality Time Together

With the busyness of everyday life, it’s easy to let quality time slip by. But I’ve learned that a strong marriage doesn’t just happen by accident. Taking time to reconnect, even if it’s just over coffee in the morning or a quick walk, makes such a difference. Those small moments of connection help us feel close and keep our bond strong.

4. Learning to Communicate (and Keep Communicating!)

Good communication is key—and it doesn’t stop with one good talk. I’ve learned that being open, honest, and gentle in my words is essential to keeping our relationship healthy. Whether it’s discussing little daily frustrations or big life decisions, keeping communication open helps us understand each other’s needs and feelings, and keeps misunderstandings from building up.

5. Finding Laughter in the Everyday

Laughter really is medicine for the soul, and it’s so important in a marriage! Whether it’s sharing a silly joke, laughing at our own quirks, or just finding humor in the daily ups and downs, laughter brings lightness to our relationship. It reminds us not to take everything so seriously and keeps us connected in a joyful way.

6. Supporting Each Other’s Growth

When we got married, I thought we’d just grow together naturally. But as life changes, I’ve realized it’s important to support each other’s individual growth too. Sometimes, that means encouraging each other’s goals and dreams, or just being there during tough times. Marriage isn’t about staying the same—it’s about growing both together and as individuals.

7. Focusing on Gratitude

One of the most impactful lessons I’ve learned is the power of gratitude. When I focus on all the things I love and appreciate about my partner, the challenges we face feel so much smaller. Practicing gratitude, even on the days that aren’t perfect, has helped me see all the good in our relationship and remember why I fell in love in the first place.

Conclusion

Marriage is a journey of love, growth, and discovery. There’s no manual for how to do it perfectly, but by choosing love, embracing the small moments, and finding joy in the everyday, we can make it a journey worth cherishing.

Thank you for reading, and I hope these lessons resonate with you, whether you’re newly married or have been together for years. Here’s to love, laughter, and all the little things that make a marriage beautiful!

  1. Communication and prioritising quality time together are definitely two things I’ve really noticed are super important. We’ve only been married 18 months so still learning bits and pieces x

  2. I looooove what you said and agree with everything…It’s all about the little things, not the grand gestures…I can’t agree more…All the other points are very valid as well.
