My Journey with Walking for Weight Loss
When I began my weight loss journey, I knew I needed something sustainable. I didn’t want anything extreme—I needed something I could enjoy, stick with, and do daily. That’s when I committed to walking. It’s simple, free, and incredibly effective. Over time, I’ve discovered that the right trail, the right mindset, and the right playlist can make all the difference.

Why Walking Works
Walking isn’t just for beginners. It’s a low-impact, fat-burning, mood-boosting form of cardio that anyone can do. Whether you’re trying to lose weight, clear your head, or stay active during a busy season, walking checks all the boxes:
- Burns calories without burning you out
- Supports heart health and endurance
- Easy on joints
- Helps manage stress and mental health
- Can be done anywhere, anytime

My Favorite Trails in North Carolina
If you’re in the Raleigh or Cary area like me, you’re in for a treat! Here are some of my favorite spots:
🥾 Reedy Creek and Loblolly Trail (Umstead Park)
These wooded trails are shaded and peaceful, perfect for a longer weekend walk. You’ll get a bit of a challenge with the terrain while staying immersed in nature.
🌳 Bond Park Lake Trail (Cary)
Bond Park is a loop trail that surrounds the lake and is perfect for a brisk, scenic walk. It’s family-friendly and a great place to clear your mind.
🚶🏽♀️ White Oak Creek Greenway Trail
Long, paved, and perfect for consistent pacing. It connects neighborhoods and parks, making it ideal for daily step goals.
🌊 Lake Johnson Trail (Raleigh)
Gorgeous views and a mix of paved and natural trails make this one of my all-time favorites. The reflections on the lake during sunrise or sunset are breathtaking.

My Power Playlist: Stay Inspired, Stay Moving
The right motivation can make or break a walk. On those days I need a push, I rely on these voices to fire me up:
- Eric Thomas (ET the Hip Hop Preacher) – “You Owe You” is on repeat when I need a mental reset.
- Denzel Washington – His commencement speeches hit me right in the heart.
- David Goggins – Pure grit and no excuses. His voice in my ear makes me walk faster, think deeper, and push harder.
Add a few of these clips to your playlist and feel the difference in your pace and purpose.

Tips to Stay Consistent
- Set a step goal – I aim for 10,000 steps a day using my Pacer app.
- Schedule your walks – Mornings and evenings work best for me.
- Walk with a purpose – Whether it’s podcast time, prayer time, or playlist time, make it meaningful.
- Dress the part – Comfortable shoes, hydration, and a tracker go a long way.
- Track your progress – Seeing your streak or miles pile up is motivating!
Final Thoughts: Step into Your Health
Walking isn’t “just walking.” It’s a powerful tool for weight loss, wellness, and mental clarity. Every step brings you closer to your goals. So find a trail you love, pump up your playlist, and get out there.
Remember: You don’t have to run. You just have to move.
