Hey, girlfriend! This is my absolute favorite topic, and I know exactly what you mean. The blessing and the curse of the “curvy hourglass”—you’ve got that snatched little waist, but your hips and butt require a PhD in denim fitting. It’s an art, not a science, but we’re going to master it.
Fall is the perfect season for our shape… it’s all about layering and structure. We don’t want to hide our curves; we want to frame them like the masterpieces they are. Don’t worry, we’re swapping the tailoring headache for pure confidence.

You know the drill, right? A sweater fits your shoulders perfectly, and it hangs like a sack over your hips. Or a skirt sits beautifully on your butt, but there’s a three-inch gap at the back of your waist. The struggle is real. It’s time to stop seeing our shape as a problem we need to hide and start seeing it as an advantage we need to dress.
This season, we’re focusing on fabrics with structure and strategic draping. We aren’t doing anything too clingy or too baggy. We want things that move with us, but still know how to hold a shape. It’s all about proportion, honey.
Secret 1: The High-Waist Foundation
This is the non-negotiable cornerstone of our fall wardrobe: the high-waist bottom.
When you have a small waist and powerful hips, high-rise styles are your secret weapon because they immediately bring the eye to your narrowest point. That’s the visual definition of “snatched,” and we love it.
The Best Denim: Forget low-rise or mid-rise jeans. They just make the hips look wider and hit you at a weird spot. We’re going straight for high-rise straight-leg or high-rise wide-leg denim. The wide leg balances the volume of your hips and creates a long, elegant line down to the floor. It’s chic, it’s comfy, and it doesn’t give you that desperate gap-at-the-back situation. If you must wear skinny jeans, look for styles with stretch and a contoured waistband that won’t create a gap. They make those now, thank goodness.

A-Line Skirts: The A-line cut is a gift from the fashion gods for our shape. It nips in at the waist and then gracefully floats away from the hips and thighs. This structure gives you shape without clinging or bunching. It’s the perfect counterpoint to a heavier fall sweater.

Trouser Wisdom: Always shop for pants that are intended to be a little roomy in the leg, like a trouser or a wide-leg pant. They drape over the hip curve beautifully without looking strained. Seriously, they look expensive, and they feel like PJs. Win-win.

Secret 2: Mastering the Belted Layer
Since our top half is smaller, we need to balance the silhouette without getting lost in fabric. The goal is to always see that tiny waist, even under a coat.
Cropped Sweaters: Don’t fear the cropped knit! A slightly cropped, fine-gauge sweater is your friend. It hits right at the top of your high-waisted pants, instantly defining your waistline and keeping the length of your body visible. You don’t get that “I’m wearing a tent” look that happens with long, boxy sweaters.

The Belted Jacket: The trench coat, the wool coat, the knit cardigan—if it zips, buttons, or wraps, belt it! This is Law 1 of Fall Layering for our shape. The belt cinches the fabric at your narrowest point, and then the coat flares out over your hips. It gives you incredible, undeniable shape. It’s a gorgeous visual trick, and it makes every outfit look instantly tailored.

V-Necks and Scoop Necks: Since we tend to have a smaller bust relative to our hips, we can handle a little attention up top to balance the lower half. V-necks and scoop necks elongate the neck and draw the eye up, which is always a great move for overall proportion.

Secret 3: The Jumpsuit & Wrap Dress Code
Dresses and jumpsuits can be the biggest headache because the top half and bottom half are never the same size. But there are ways around it.
Wrap Dresses: I can’t say it enough: The wrap dress is our signature look. It is literally designed to fit the hourglass shape. It ties exactly where your waist is and drapes over your hips and thighs. Look for one in a heavier knit or wool blend for fall. It’s effortless elegance.

Jumpsuit Joy (Look for Darts!): If you love jumpsuits, look for a style that has defined seams or darts in the waist area, or one that comes with a belt. The wide-leg jumpsuit is another winner because, again, the wide leg is proportional to the hips. If you have to buy a size that fits your lower body and take in the top, do it. A $20 tailoring job is worth the confidence boost of a perfect fit. It truly is.

Stretch and Structure: When buying dresses, look for fabrics with just enough stretch to mold to your curves but enough structure to avoid showing every single bump. A good ponte knit or a thick cotton blend is usually a safe bet.

My Final Word on Confidence (It’s Contagious)
Listen, you’re not an odd size; you have an incredible shape! The secret to making any of these tips work isn’t the fabric or the cut… it’s the way you walk in the room.
If you carry yourself like the fashion icon you are, everyone else will see it too. Don’t be afraid to dress for the body you have. Now go build your fall wardrobe, girl. You’ve got this! ✨
