Chaos & Kindness

Just as I was about to lose my mind, a little girl’s voice cut through the mall’s cacophony. She was chasing me, clutching my phone, which I’d absentmindedly left in the food court. Relief washed over me as I thanked her and walked her back to her beaming parents. They even let me treat her to a reward, a small act of kindness that warmed my chaotic day.

But the universe, it seemed, had other plans for my sanity. Before I could catch my breath, my phone’s alarm shrieked, reminding me of my daughter Zaya’s game. I called her, but before I could reach her, my husband called back, wanting to know about dinner plans. Then, Zaya herself called, lost and confused in the mall.

My phone became a symphony of beeps and buzzes. As I navigated the mall, her and her three teammates materialized in the distance. Fast forward to the car as we began to leave, while my phone screamed with my husband’s familiar ringtone, and the GPS lady insisted I turn right. Meanwhile, TikTok tunes blared from three different phones, punctuated by the girls’ infectious giggles.

Taking a deep sip of my lukewarm latte, I muttered to myself, “Growth happens outside my comfort zone, and the chaos is my invitation to bloom and become a stronger, more adaptable mother.”

Game Time and Family Pizza

We arrived at the game just in time. My husband and nephew waved from the stands, and nephew, bursting with excitement, showed off his progress in his video game. He bargained for ice cream in exchange for counting the red team’s scores.

Finally settling down, I spotted Zaya, her eyes sparkling with joy as she waved at us. My husband snapped pictures, clearly happy to escape the office grind. He asked about my day, and I simply smiled and said, “It’s Monday.”

Fast forward to the pizza house. The girls devoured their slices while posting pictures and scrolling through TikTok. My nephew munched on ice cream and played games, my husband checked the news, and my phone, predictably, rang. It was my sister, struggling to find parking.

As I met her at the door, I sensed tension between her and a couple in the parking lot. My husband intervened, and moments later, all parties approached me with smiles. Pizza, politics, and polite conversation followed.

Finally, at 10.39 pm, I crawled into bed, exhausted but strangely content. My husband kissed me goodnight, and I knew the next five days would be a blur of similar activities.

A Saturday Surprise

But Saturday night brought a surprise. My husband slipped into bed at 9.22 pm, a rare occurrence. “Dishes done, kids om bed, house secure, all before 9.30 pm!” he announced proudly. It was a small victory, but it felt like a trophy. He asked what I wanted to do tomorrow.

“Sleep in and enjoy a digital detox,” I replied.

He held me close. “You have it, my queen.”

Self – Care Sunday Morning Bliss

The aroma of breakfast woke me up on Sunday morning. It was 9:17 am, and I stretched luxuriously, feeling the sleep melt away. A note on the nightstand, where my phone usually lay, read, “The world will be there later. Enjoy a warm shower.”

Excitement bubbled in my chest. I tiptoed to the master bathroom, where another note awaited me on the door: “Today is your day.”

After a long, relaxing shower, I emerged to find a sign on the outside of our bedroom door: “Do not enter. Mommy morning in.”

Smiling, I descended the stairs. My teenage daughter was pouring orange juice, chatting with her dad as he cooked in the kitchen. I settled on the steps, savoring the peace. They hadn’t noticed me yet.

I eavesdropped on their conversation, catching my youngest daughter’s attempt to negotiate checking Instagram while I slept. My husband chuckled and reminded her, “Zaya, Instagram will be there at noon.”

My eldest daughter, Zyan, chimed in, “FOMO?”

I couldn’t help but laugh. Busted. They spotted me, and my youngest, ever the charmer, announced, “Hey Mom, I’m making your favorite blueberry muffins!”

My husband kissed me good morning, and stated “breakfast was almost ready”. As we sat down, the conversation flowed naturally. We discussed my daughter’ desire for Instagram, and my eldest shared her perspective on the importance of unplugging sometimes. My husband added that Zoey, our middle child, was still asleep after a late night finishing a project. He assured us she’d call once she woke up.

Laughter, Lies, and Love: Lessons Learned from a Digital Detox Sunday

The rest of the breakfast was filled with laughter and genuine connection. We shared stories, dreams, and plans for the future. It was a stark contrast to the previous week’s whirlwind, and I felt a sense of calm and contentment I hadn’t realized I was missing.

After breakfast, we gathered the dogs, Zeus and Zero, for a family walk. The crisp Carolina winter air invigorated us as we talked, the chaos of the week fading into the background. We discussed weekend plans, upcoming school events, and everything in between. It was a simple act, a family walk, but it felt like a reset button, a chance to reconnect and recharge.

Noon came and went, unnoticed in the whirlwind of our shared laughter and conversation. It wasn’t until 1:12 p.m. that Zoey’s call from college broke the spell. Sleepily, she inquired about our digital detox, her voice carrying the sweetness of distance and love. We all looked at each other, faces aglow with a newfound peace. “Nice,” we chorused, the word echoing with a thousand unspoken emotions. In that simple, shared moment, we knew we had stumbled upon something precious, a reminder that the most beautiful things in life are often found not in the digital scroll, but in the quiet spaces of connection and love.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows on the path, I knew that the coming week would probably bring its own share of challenges and chaos. But now, I felt prepared. I had tasted the sweetness of calm, the joy of connection, and the strength that comes from facing the storms together. I knew that even amidst the chaos, there were moments of beauty, pockets of peace, and a love that could weather any storm.

That night, as I drifted off to sleep, a smile played on my lips. The week had been a whirlwind, but it had also been a reminder of the preciousness of family, the importance of self-care, and the strength found in embracing the chaos. And in that quiet moment, I knew that I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
