Autophagy Made Simple: How Your Body Cleans, Heals, and Recharges Itself Naturally

what is autophagy

Sharing is caring!

Hey lovely people! It’s Lavanda Michelle, and today, I’m diving into something I had never even heard of when I first started my health journey—but now I can’t stop talking about it! It’s called autophagy, and no, it’s not a fancy spa treatment (though it feels like one for your body!).

When I learned about it, I was like, “Wait, my body can clean itself?” And the answer is YES—beautifully, naturally, and powerfully.

Let me break it down in a way that’s super simple, easy to follow, and might just change how you look at food, fasting, and your body’s natural healing magic.

What Is Autophagy?

Let’s keep it real: autophagy sounds like a science word from a biology textbook. But it’s actually something your body does every single day.

Autophagy means “self-eating,” but it’s not as weird as it sounds. It’s how your body cleans out the junk—damaged cells, toxins, and waste—and makes room for new, strong, healthy cells. It’s like when you clean out your fridge, toss the expired stuff, and restock it with fresh ingredients.

Why Autophagy Matters

Here’s what happens when autophagy is working properly:

  • You feel more energized
  • Your cells repair themselves better
  • It may help you burn fat more efficiently
  • Your immune system gets stronger
  • It supports brain health and even slows aging

It’s your body’s natural way of healing from the inside out—without pills or powders.

What Boosts Autophagy?

1. Intermittent Fasting

This is one of my go-to tools! When you fast (even just 12–16 hours), your body gets a break from digesting and starts cleaning instead. I personally use a 16:8 window—16 hours of fasting, 8 hours of eating—and it’s been a game-changer.

2. Eating the Right Foods

Some foods actually support autophagy naturally:

  • Green tea or matcha
  • Turmeric
  • Garlic
  • Cruciferous veggies like broccoli and kale
  • Healthy fats from avocados, olive oil, and salmon

These are now staples in my kitchen!

3. Exercise

Even a brisk walk (you know I love getting my steps in!) can kickstart autophagy. Bonus points for yoga or strength training a few times a week!

4. Sleep & Stress Reduction

Y’all, sleep is not optional! I used to think hustle meant less rest—but now I know healing happens while we sleep. A calm mind and a rested body = a clean, thriving system.

Final Thoughts from Lavanda Michelle

Autophagy is like giving your body a deep-clean, a tune-up, and a hug—all at the same time.

Learning about this was one of those lightbulb moments on my journey. I didn’t need to buy fancy detox teas or magic pills. My body just needed a little support—good food, movement, rest, and time to work its magic.

Now, I feel stronger, lighter, and more connected to what my body needs. And I want that for you too.

Let’s keep walking, learning, and growing together. And remember—you’re not just losing weight or counting steps—you’re healing, from the inside out.
