I’ll admit, when I first learned about Garrett Morgan, I was blown away. Most of us know the names Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Harriet Tubman—and rightfully so—but history is packed with unsung heroes whose brilliance quietly shaped our world.
Garrett Morgan was an inventor, entrepreneur, and community leader. You might not know that he invented the three-position traffic signal we still rely on today. Before his invention, traffic lights only had “stop” and “go,” which caused accidents and chaos on the streets. Morgan’s addition of a “caution” signal literally saved countless lives—and made modern city traffic possible.

But here’s the part that really got me… Morgan wasn’t just tinkering in a lab for fame or money. He used his inventions to protect and uplift his community, from fighting gas-mask dangers to volunteering during emergencies. He believed in making life safer and better for everyone around him, even when the world wasn’t ready to celebrate a Black inventor.
Stories like Garrett Morgan’s remind me that impact doesn’t always come with headlines. Change often starts quietly—with someone solving a problem no one else thought they could. And even though history sometimes forgets these heroes, their work touches our lives every single day… often without us even realizing it.
So, this Black History Month, I challenge us all to look a little deeper. There’s power in discovering the stories that history books skipped over. And who knows? Maybe one of us will inspire the next generation in ways we can’t even imagine yet.
