Is Your Grill Actually Ready for BBQ Season?

Sharing is caring!

Is it just me, or does the first scent of charcoal in the air feel like a total mood shift? Living in North Carolina, we get those gorgeous spring days where the sun hits just right, and suddenly, the only thing I want to do is move my entire life—and my dinner—outside.

But here is the thing… if your grill has been sitting lonely in the garage or under a dusty cover all winter, it’s probably not ready for its big debut quite yet.

I’ve definitely been that person who gets the chicken all marinated and ready to go, only to realize the grill grates look like a science experiment. It’s frustrating, right? You want to be “Slow Living” and enjoying the breeze, not scrubbing rust for two hours while everyone is getting hungry.

So, grab a coffee, and let’s get your grill back into its “Soft Girl Era” before the first cookout of the year.

Give it the Deep Clean Treatment

First things first, we have to deal with the leftover “ghosts” of last year’s burgers. If you have a gas grill, turn that baby up to high for about fifteen minutes. Let it just burn off all the old residue. Once it cools down a bit, give it a good scrub.

If you’re a charcoal fan like me, make sure you’re starting with a fresh slate. Empty those old ashes. There is something so satisfying about a clean grill bowl, isn’t there?

The “Safety First” Check-In

I know, I know… safety sounds boring. But trust me, checking your fuel lines is essential. If you’re using propane, try the “soapy water trick.” Just brush some soapy water on the hoses and turn the gas on. If you see bubbles? You’ve got a leak. It’s better to find that out now than when you’re mid-flip on a rack of ribs.

And please, check for spiders. They love to make little homes in the burner tubes over the winter. A quick poke with a pipe cleaner saves a lot of headache later.

Seasoning Isn’t Just for the Food

Most people forget this part! You want your grates to be non-stick and protected from rust. After you’ve cleaned them, wipe them down with a little bit of oil—canola or grapeseed works perfectly. Heat it up until it gets dark and shiny. It’s basically like seasoning a cast-iron skillet, and it makes cooking so much easier.

Inventory and Atmosphere

Check your tools. Do you actually know where your tongs are? Do the batteries in your meat thermometer still work? I usually find that one of my dogs—looking at you, Zeus—has somehow moved something or it’s vanished into the “outdoor drawer” abyss.

Once the gear is ready, think about the vibe. String some lights, wipe down the patio chairs, and make it a space you actually want to hang out in. BBQ season is about more than just the food; it’s about that intentional, easy connection with the people you love.

At the end of the day, there is just something so special about those long, slow evenings spent in the backyard. Whether you’re flipping plant-forward burgers or trying out a new high-protein marinade, having a grill that’s ready to go makes the whole experience feel like a breeze instead of a chore. We’re choosing ease this season, right? So, take thirty minutes this weekend to show your grill a little love… your future, hungry self will definitely thank you for it.

I’d love to hear from you—what is the first thing you’re planning to throw on the grill this year? Are you sticking with the classics or trying something totally new? Drop a comment below and let’s swap some recipe inspo!
