When it comes to caring for your children, it might feel like a pretty obvious and simple topic of conversation, yet it can be helpful to consider the following points in terms of optimizing your ability to take care of your children and for them to develop into healthy, happy, human beings!
- CARE FOR YOURSELF FIRST
This might feel counterintuitive, but just like how a pilot will tell passengers to tend to their own gas mask first before helping their children, it makes sense that unless you take care of yourself first – you will not be in the position to take care of others.
In this vein, many wealthy people advise those that want to help others, financially, to first focus on becoming wealthy themselves – as you can help many more people when you are wealthy than when you are poor.
In this sense, you can be poor on self-care, and when you are poor on this aspect of taking care of yourself, you will have little to give others. Therefore, prioritize your needs from time to time. Take some time out to ensure your emotional needs are being met, rather than living in a constant state of reaction to your children’s needs.
- TIE UP LOOSE ENDS
If there are loose ends hanging over your head, for instance, if there was an issue at birth that has not been followed up on it would be a good idea to contact the birth injury lawyers from Gray and White Law to ensure you aren’t leaving money on the table that could go toward medical care.
- LOOK AFTER THEIR HEALTH
Your child’s health is perhaps one of the most important and fundamental aspects of your child’s wellbeing. In this sense, you want to be sure to look after his or her health to the best of your ability. That’s not to say you need to wrap them up in cotton wool and ensure they never come into harm’s way – it’s more about making sure they have good nutrition, plenty of exercises, and that there are measures in place to support them should they become sick (i.e. a decent health insurance policy).
- EDUCATION
Ensuring your child accesses the best education can be challenging as it is somewhat contingent on the area in which you live and the finances you have available to fund their education. That said, there are things you can do to enhance your child’s education outside of the school system.
Whilst some parents choose to homeschool their children, one of the best things you can do is to ensure that you are constantly challenging and stimulating your child, creating an inquisitive mindset that leads to them developing their own intelligence outside of the classroom; as, after all, academic learning is only one strand of intelligence and education.
Be sure to encourage their creativity, problem-solving skills, and their ability to adopt a positive attitude. This way, you are building the internal skills required to succeed in the modern world. In fact, even television can be your friend when it comes to this stuff, as rather than allow older children to sit watching pointless cartoons or encourage them to watch Shark Tank and start to think more like an entrepreneur. Indeed, television can be very inspiring and a good tool, when used correctly.
- LOVE
Something that is overlooked, or at least underappreciated, when it comes to caring for your children is their emotional need for love and attention. Indeed, the majority of social problems are a result of not receiving enough love and attention as a child, for many children will “act out” in negative ways in an attempt to win the attention of their parents.
In terms of helping your child develop high levels of self-confidence and self-esteem, there’s no greater way of doing this than to create an emotionally stable loving home. This sense of stability and unconditional love is what every child needs to grow and develop into a healthy adult, and whilst it can be challenging at times, it’s imperative you focus on providing as much love and stability to your child as possible.
In summary, caring for your child isn’t rocket science, yet it must be balanced throughout various strands – if you provide for your child financially, but aren’t able to provide the time and attention required for him or her to feel loved, things are out of balance… similarly, if you express your love through allowing them to go to McDonald’s every day and not looking after their nutrition, things are out of balance too.
The key, therefore, is to find balance across all these areas, and the best way to do that is to first take care of yourself so you’re in a better position to care for your family.
