Sharing is caring!

A home should be a sanctuary – a place where you can relax, rejuvenate, be calm, and enjoy the company of those you love. Unfortunately, a home can also be hectic, dirty, and disorganized, especially if you have kids or pets. Of course, you don’t need a spotless, perfectly organized home to be happy, but organization makes a huge difference in getting through your day without hassle.

Luckily, there are several strategies you can use to make sure your home stays clean, organized, and a place of refuge for you and your family. Let’s take a look at some home organization tips that you can start using today.

Home Organization Tips

Minimalism

Converting to a minimalist lifestyle is one way to make it easier to have a clean and organized home. In addition to highlighting clean, simple pieces, minimalism also focuses on having functional items that can serve more than one purpose. Fewer possessions mean fewer things to organize and keep track of. Lack of clutter also makes cleaning easier and less time-consuming.

Starting small is key when creating a minimalist home. Focusing on small, incremental changes in your home will make the process easier and less overwhelming. A great place to start is often finding storage for seasonal items that you’re not using. After that, go room by room and assess what you need, what you want, and what you can do without.

Think about every new item you bring into your home and ask yourself if you really need it. Some people find it helpful to have a rule of getting rid of one old item for every new item that comes through the door. Following these rules for minimalism will help you keep your possessions under control, organized, and clean.

Organization

Ah, organization — something that’s always on your to-do list but somehow always falls to the bottom and never gets crossed off. Keeping small spaces organized can be extremely difficult and especially hard with kids and animals running around.

Utilizing a few home organization tips can go a long way in keeping your space in top shape and containing clutter. First of all, taking of advantage of wall space is a must, especially in small spaces. Why stack things haphazardly when you could hang them and have them out of your way?

Organization Organizing closet space is another “must” for keeping your home in order. Prioritize functional shelving, hanging space, and getting rid of unused items — no stuffing things inside the closet and hastily closing the door before they spill out. You can consider getting customized closets that are designed by Closets Etc. with your space in mind to make this step easier.

Home organization comes down to not having more than you need and giving everything you do need its own designated place. Excess items can go in storage so your home remains clutter-free.

Cleaning

An organized home is nothing if it’s not clean as well. Muddy dog paws, messy children, and a revolving door of guests can make keeping on top of household chores, well, a chore. It can be easy to feel hopeless and wonder how you will ever get your home to a state of sparkling cleanliness.

Creating a chore wheel that incorporates a cleaning schedule is one of the best and easiest ways to get the whole family involved with household upkeep. Put simple, weekly jobs on the chore wheel and then create a monthly cleaning to-do list for more in-depth jobs. Everyone can rotate through chores so no one gets stuck cleaning the bathrooms every week.

One thing that will really help the success of your chore wheel is having the right tools for the job. Make them accessible, too. No one’s going to want to vacuum if they have to battle to reach the vacuum cleaner at the back of the full closet. If cleaning tools are easy to find and in working condition, chore time is that much more enjoyable.

Keeping your home organized doesn’t have to be a nightmare. It can actually be fun and satisfying to morph your chaotic home into a place of calm and cozy happiness. It just takes good systems, minimal items, and the cooperation of your family. Everyone will likely be happier in a clean and organized home.

  1. Yes, organized is nice but if it’s not clean too, things still feel off. We are only able to clean-clean on the weekends and I really wish we had time during the work week as well.

  2. I have also found it so challenging to keep things clean and organised with kids! Having a place for everything really helps.
