5 Healthy Habits to Adopt in 2019

New Year’s resolutions don’t always hold up past January, but that does not in any way mean that we shouldn’t attempt them at all. Most importantly, we have to remember that we can’t simply wake up in January and be a different person; we have to prepare for that, plan our resolutions and be realistic.

New Year’s resolutions don’t always hold up past January, but that does not in any way mean that we shouldn’t attempt them at all. Most importantly, we have to remember that we can’t simply wake up in January and be a different person; we have to prepare for that, plan our resolutions and be realistic. Crucially, we have to pick the habits we know will actually be healthy and helpful to us, such as these:

Stop eating out

We are so addicted to things that are handed on a plate to us, that we rarely see all of the benefits that cooking for ourselves could do. There are a few obvious ones: knowing exactly what’s in your food and lower costs, but there is also the matter of what cooking at home gives us besides food: more activity, a sense of closeness to the people we’re cooking for, bonding with your family if you are cooking together, learning valuable kitchen skills and, of course, your house will smell amazing every day. But you can’t just suddenly start cooking if you’ve never done it before, or you’ll end up eating cooked eggs every day. Get yourself some kitchen supplies (or suggest them as gifts to your close ones) and start finding recipes you like. Find meals that take various cooking times and ingredients, so that you always have something ready, no matter the situation.

Start walking

It’s incredible how little walking we actually do on a day-to-day basis. We take the bus or car and walk as far as the entrance, but that simply isn’t enough, especially if you have a job that requires a lot of sitting. So get yourself a little step-measuring bracelet and start walking places. Or better yet, start jogging. Running to catch the bus doesn’t count: go for meaningful walks with the purpose of getting some movement. You can get comfortable sneakers such as Sketchers online as a New Year’s gift for yourself and use them as a way to bribe yourself to walk more. If you get someone to join you, you’re more likely to stick to it, but you can also go alone and listen to an audiobook, enjoying the scenery.

Have more meaningful connections

There are two main types of people that we associate with: close friends and acquaintances. No matter how many Facebook friends you have, it’s the meaningful, close relationships that are important. You might not feel lonely and you might be surrounded by people all day long, but you are craving close connections, like the ones you have with your family. So try working on having a closer bond with people who matter to you: go out for coffee twice a month, and don’t just text – actually, call each other in the evening and talk about your day and your feelings. If you have people who take up a lot of your time, yet you don’t have a meaningful relationship, it’s perhaps time to part ways.

Take time to relax

Stress is one of the biggest issues we have today. Everyone is stressed, in a rush, on a deadline or just filling their time with meaningless little tasks. But it’s time to stop distracting ourselves and start thinking more clearly. Leave some time in your morning routine to calm down, sit by a window and collect your thoughts. Don’t just spend your lunch break catching up on gossip; go for a walk and let your mind wander. Just unwind and de-stress.

Go to the doctor regularly

We all have doctor’s appointments that we’ve been postponing to infinity. Perhaps you need to visit a dentist for that tooth that keeps hurting when you eat sweets or a dermatologist for a spot that has appeared, but you assure yourself it’s nothing. There’s nothing bad that can come from seeing the doctor. They are there to help. If there is something wrong, then you want to know about it and get it taken care of as soon as possible, and if there isn’t, then you want the load off your chest. Making an appointment really doesn’t take that long, so go ahead and do it. Put your health first.

We tend to put everything else in the world in front of our own well-being, and it’s about time we stopped. Give yourself the best possible gift you can this year and make yourself healthier for your own good.
