Hello, friends! I’m Lavanda Michelle, and I’ve been on quite a journey. It’s been a journey of transformation, learning, and overcoming setbacks. Today, I want to share with you a chapter in my health journey that I think could make a real difference in yours. If you’ve been struggling with plateaus in your weight loss or health goals, this might just resonate with you.

In June 2024, I set out on a mission to lose 90 pounds in two years. I had already made great strides before hitting a plateau. By the time December 2024 came around, I had lost 42 pounds in only 2 months. I felt proud of what I had accomplished but also frustrated by how I had stalled. Despite my best efforts to stay active, eat well, and practice mindful habits, my weight loss had come to a screeching halt. It felt like no matter what I did, I wasn’t making any more progress.

It was during this time of frustration that I experienced a medical incident in December 2024 (we will discuss that in another blog post) that changed the direction of my journey. This event forced me to slow down and really take a closer look at my health and the decisions I had been making for the last 3 months, including the level of stress I was under. As a mom and wife, I had been hiding the stress from my family. I was focusing on just getting through each day, not realizing how much pressure I was putting on myself both physically and mentally.

A Time for Reflection and Research

With the medical incident forcing me to slow down, I finally had time to reflect and reassess my health journey. This time off gave me an opportunity to dive deep into research. I spent the next few months educating myself about all aspects of health, wellness, and nutrition. My focus shifted from just losing weight to truly understanding how to nourish my body in a way that would support sustainable, long-term health.

During my recovery, I gained nearly 30 pounds—yep, exactly 30.2 lbs. Ouch, right? It was definitely a tough pill to swallow, especially after all the progress I had made. At first, it felt like I was back at square one, but you know what? This setback didn’t get the best of me. I’ve learned so much along the way, and now it’s time to put all those lessons into action! Every challenge is just another chance to grow, and I’m excited to keep pushing forward on this journey.

As I looked into different ways to boost my health and continue my progress, I kept encountering a concept that intrigued me: functional foods. Functional foods are foods that provide health benefits beyond basic nutrition. These foods are packed with nutrients, antioxidants, and other bioactive compounds that support various bodily functions, like improving metabolism, enhancing digestion, and reducing inflammation. For someone like me, struggling to break through a plateau, this concept felt like it could be the key I was missing.

Discovering the Power of Functional Foods

As I dove into learning more about functional foods, I realized that incorporating them into my meals could help me not only break through my plateau but also support my overall health and wellness goals. So, I decided to integrate some of the most powerful functional foods into my daily routine.

Today is March 24, 2025, my 47th birthday, and I feel incredibly blessed to be celebrating another year of life. As I reflect on my health journey, I realize how far I’ve come and the lessons I’ve learned along the way. This chapter of my journey is all about functional foods—the transformative foods that I’ve recently started incorporating into my routine. Though I’ve only been eating functional foods for two weeks, I already feel the positive effects they’ve had on my health, and I’m excited to share my experience with you.

After months of learning about nutrition, my plateau, and the ups and downs of my journey, I realized that functional foods might be just what I needed to break through. These foods go beyond basic nutrition—they have specific properties that can enhance metabolism, improve digestion, reduce inflammation, and provide long-term health benefits. So, in the last two weeks, I’ve made the conscious decision to include them in my meals, and I can already tell the difference.

Here are some of the functional foods I’ve started incorporating into my meals, and how they’ve already started making an impact on my journey:

1. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV): A Digestive and Metabolic Boost

Apple cider vinegar isn’t just for salad dressings! After learning about its many benefits, I started incorporating ACV into my routine. It helps with balancing blood sugar levels, promoting satiety, and improving digestion. The acetic acid in ACV can also aid in fat burning and help prevent fat storage. I began diluting 1-2 tablespoons of ACV in a glass of water and drinking it before my meals. This small addition helped curb my appetite, improved my digestion, and made me feel more energized.

2. Ginger: A Thermogenic and Anti-Inflammatory Ally

Ginger is not just a flavorful spice—it’s an incredible anti-inflammatory powerhouse. I’ve always known that ginger helped with nausea, but I didn’t realize how beneficial it could be for weight management. Ginger has thermogenic properties, which means it helps your body burn fat for energy. It also supports digestion and reduces bloating, which I was struggling with at the time. I started incorporating ginger into my smoothies, teas, and meals. It was amazing how quickly I felt the effects, from less bloating to feeling more “light” after meals.

3. Turmeric: The Fat-Burning, Anti-Inflammatory Powerhouse

I had heard of turmeric for years but never truly understood its power until I started researching functional foods. Turmeric contains curcumin, a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound that supports fat metabolism and reduces fat accumulation, especially in the abdominal area. I began adding turmeric to my soups, stews, and even smoothies. I didn’t just feel better overall, but I also noticed my energy levels were higher, and my digestion was smoother.

4. Seaweed: A Superfood for Metabolism and Gut Health

Seaweed is packed with iodine, which supports thyroid function and helps regulate metabolism. I learned that many types of seaweed—like wakame, kelp, and nori—are rich in fiber and antioxidants that promote gut health and can reduce fat absorption. Incorporating seaweed into my meals was easier than I thought. I added it to salads, soups, and sushi rolls. Not only did it provide a unique and delicious flavor, but it also supported my metabolism and digestive health.

5. Prebiotic-Rich Beverages: Gut Health and Digestion

One of the more enjoyable parts of my journey was incorporating prebiotic-rich beverages, like kombucha and prebiotic sodas, into my routine. Prebiotics are a type of fiber that helps nourish the beneficial bacteria in your gut. Since gut health is directly linked to weight management, I found that adding these drinks to my daily routine not only improved my digestion but also made me feel more balanced and energized. I felt like I was finally giving my gut the support it needed to function optimally.

A Holistic Approach: Mindful Eating, Movement, and Consistency

Even with the powerful benefits of functional foods, I knew it wasn’t just about what I ate—it was about how I lived. As I slowly recovered from my medical incident, I maintained my commitment to mindful eating. This approach helped me truly listen to my body and become more aware of when I was hungry or full, which helped prevent overeating.

I also stayed active by walking every day. I started with 3,000 steps and gradually increased to 5,000 to 10,000 steps per day. Walking became my form of self-care—it gave me time to think, reflect, and enjoy the outdoors while also keeping me physically active.

Breaking Through the Plateau: The Power of Consistency

With the combination of functional foods, mindful eating, and consistent movement, I finally broke through my plateau. Instead of losing a few pounds one week only to gain them back the next, I’ve noticed a steady, small decrease in my weight each week. It’s not a rapid change, but it’s a consistent one, and I’m happy with the progress. Functional foods have given my body the support it needed to keep moving forward, and I’m feeling better both physically and mentally. This steady progress is exactly what I needed to stay motivated and focused on my journey.

Now, I am more focused than ever on my health journey, and I’m excited to keep exploring the benefits of functional foods. My goal is no longer just about losing weight; it’s about nourishing my body, mind, and spirit for long-term health. I’ve realized that the key to success isn’t about extreme diets or quick fixes—it’s about consistency, education, and listening to my body.

Looking Ahead: The Next Chapter in My Journey

As I continue this journey, I’m excited to see where the power of functional foods will take me. I’m grateful for the lessons I’ve learned and the progress I’ve made. My journey is far from over, and I’m eager to share each new step with you.
