Sharing is caring!

Regularly attending the gym is one of the very best things you can do for your health. We all lead busy lifestyles, and it can be hard to find time to fit exercise in. But the gym gives you place you can go to a few times a week (for just an hour time) and get a great really workout in. You don’t need to spend hours walking or slogging over time-consuming activities, you can turn up, buckle down and you’ll be there before you know it. Whether you’re a gym buff or a total beginner, whether you love cardio or prefer resistance training, there genuinely is something for you at any gym. However, SO many people have a bit of a phobia when it comes to attending gyms, many refusing to step through the doors at all. It’s a real shame when they’re so convenient (often open 24 hours) with all of the equipment you could possibly need to get fit- and they’re really not scary at all. If you have a bit of a phobia of the gym but want to push past it, here are some ways to go about it.

Book an induction

If you’ve not been to the gym in a long time (or ever) your main concern might be not knowing how to work the equipment. While most things really are very intuitive, if you’re concerned, just book an induction. A member of staff will show you how to use each of the machines so you can turn up and confidently workout knowing what you’re doing.

Buddy up

Sometimes we need a friend to lean on when we find situations tough, so if you need a friend to come along with you (even if it’s just for the first few sessions) try and rope one of your besties into coming with you. You’ll have a laugh and can figure things out together.

Build some foundation fitness

If you’re worried about getting to the gym and not being able to do anything then building up some foundation fitness could put your mind at ease. There really is something for everyone at the gym, you don’t need to hop onto the treadmill and start sprinting you could just walk. But if your fitness is very low and it worries you, start out by doing some short walks in your area or buy some gym equipment to use at home. There’s a huge range of gym and fitness equipment online so purchase what suits you, you could always supplement your gym workouts with home workouts than when you finally join.

Buy some new workout clothes

It sounds shallow but it’s really not- if you feel good on the outside it can give you confidence. Some workout clothes that flatter your body and make you feel good about yourself should be on your shopping list.

Go off-peak or consider an all- women’s gym

If it’s being surrounded by other people while you workout that puts you off, you have options. Go off-peak, depending on your work hours try to go later in the evening, very early in the morning or during the day. Avoid the hours between 7-9am and 5-7pm when people will be flooding the gym before and after work. All women’s gyms are another option and can feel a little less daunting to some people.
