For years, it felt like I gained weight overnight. I didn’t know why my body was working against me. The fatigue, the bloating, the shortness of breath—it all became a daily battle. When I was finally diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome), it all started to make sense… but that didn’t make it any easier.
This is my journey with PCOS—and how intermittent fasting (IF) helped me take back control.

The Diagnosis That Changed Everything
Before my diagnosis, I was constantly asking myself:
Why am I gaining weight so fast—even when I’m eating healthy? Why do I feel so tired all the time?
Then came the words from my doctor: “You have PCOS.”
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome not only impacted my weight and hormones, but also worsened my asthma. Because of the inflammation in my body, I was prescribed steroids regularly to manage breathing issues—which only made weight gain worse.
I felt stuck in a vicious cycle:
- Weight gain ➡️ worsened asthma
- Asthma flare-ups ➡️ steroid treatment
- Steroids ➡️ more weight gain
- More weight ➡️ more PCOS symptoms

The Turning Point: Discovering Intermittent Fasting (IF)
After years of frustration, I started researching holistic and sustainable ways to manage PCOS naturally. That’s when I discovered intermittent fasting.
At first, I was skeptical. Skipping meals to feel better? But after diving into the science and easing into a 16:8 fasting window, I began to see changes:
- My energy improved
- My asthma flare-ups lessened
- I started losing weight (without extreme dieting)
- My cycles became more regular
- I felt like me again

Why Intermittent Fasting Works for PCOS
Here’s why IF made such a difference:
- Improved Insulin Sensitivity
PCOS is tied to insulin resistance. Fasting helps lower insulin levels and reduce sugar cravings. - Hormone Regulation
Fasting helps regulate hormones like leptin and ghrelin (your hunger hormones), helping you feel full longer. - Reduced Inflammation
IF reduces systemic inflammation, which not only helped my PCOS symptoms—but also my asthma. - Easier Caloric Control (Without Obsessing)
Having a set eating window helped me stay consistent without obsessing over every calorie.

How I Started IF (Without Feeling Deprived)
If you’re new to fasting, here’s what worked for me:
- Start slow with a 12:12 or 14:10 window
- Drink water, herbal teas, and electrolytes
- Break your fast with protein + fiber
- Keep your meals whole, balanced, and satisfying
- Give your body time—it will adjust
Final Thoughts
Living with PCOS felt like losing control of my body. But learning about intermittent fasting gave me the tools to manage my health naturally, without more medications or restrictive diets.
If you’re navigating life with PCOS, just know—you’re not alone. There is hope, there are solutions, and most importantly, you are not broken.
