The world we live in today differs a lot from the world our parents and grandparents lived in, and our priorities have changed as well. A healthy lifestyle has become a priority because it seems like we’re exposed to a great deal of stress and we’ve adopted a lot of unhealthy habits too. Most people think that changing their lifestyle demands some radical measures, which is why they prefer not to change anything rather than even try. On the contrary, it’s exactly the opposite: the fastest way to live healthier is to change simple things in life.
Benefits of walking
If you are not really into spending hours sweating on the treadmill in the gym and lifting weights isn’t really your cup of tea, we have great news for you. Did you know that the human body is primarily made for walking? Walking makes you much happier and healthier no matter what age and shape you are. It has a great impact on your posture and it doesn’t burden your knees and ligaments as much as running. People are capable of walking for hours without feeling any fatigue; it stabilizes our blood pressure, making your heart beats strong and even, and helping our body quickly recover from various diseases. Walking can be a healthy alternative to driving a car or taking a bus to your job.
Activities which make you happy
Being active doesn’t necessarily mean that you should do exhausting workouts where you’ll be forcing your body to do something you don’t really like or enjoy. On the contrary, it sounds like a self-imposed torturing routine and this is usually counterproductive. You will eventually end up either with an injury or being completely fed-up with your workouts. Try to think of activities which make you happy and stick to them. No matter if it’s table tennis, ballroom dancing, or snowboarding, it’s important that you stay motivated and satisfied at the end of the day. If doing something doesn’t make you wish to do it again, simply don’t do it and try something else.
Find a way to enjoy healthy foods
We get it – you just love eating burgers, pizza, and pancakes with Nutella because they’re delicious but we have some bad news for you. Most delicious foods we eat are bad for our health. On the other hand, we also have some good news: we are often attracted by certain spices, aromas, or even a specific way the food is made, rather than the food itself. Let’s take barbeque for example – what we really love about it is the smoked flavor and the texture of marinated meat. Knowing this, we could actually include more vegetables into our diet simply by reducing the amount of meat. Instead, we could marinate and grill more mushrooms, potatoes, onions, cauliflower, smoked tofu, and bell peppers. You will be surprised just how easy it can be to substitute those unhealthy deep-fried foods with something healthier yet equally delicious.
Controlling obesity
Being happy with the way you look, your shape and figure, and feeling good in your body would do you a lot of good. It could actually prevent some serious health issues such as heart disease, diabetes, depression, or even cancer. Doctors from Central Coast Weight Loss Surgery claim that individuals are considered obese when their body mass index exceeds 30 kg/m2, and that obesity can lead to other health problems and complications, including heart disease, diabetes, and obstructive sleep apnoea. Obesity primarily refers to unbalanced higher levels of fats accumulated during years of unhealthy habits and diet. Losing weight when you’re obese is difficult because there are many more factors to consider, which is why many people consider and reach for weight loss surgery.
Mental hygiene
There’s a famous quote stating that you are what you think, meaning that every thought has its weight and value. Many people are overthinking their current situations and problems, which can lead to being mentally and physically worn down. One of the most important rules of long-term happiness is being able to separate your work and your personal life. Once you close the door of your office, you should close the door of your mind too until tomorrow morning. Now it’s time to show affection and enjoy small things with your family, friends, and pets, and to recharge your batteries if you want to do your best at work.
Sleeping hygiene
We usually forget just how important it is to give our bodies and minds plenty of time to have a good rest and enough sleep. In theory, your biorhythm should follow the natural day and night cycles; meaning that you could (and should) go to sleep soon after sunset. In reality, we suggest you try to go to bed before midnight because this will give you enough time to rest. Keep in mind that your brain needs four and your body six hours of sleep. It seems as if the shift from non-REM to REM sleep always happens at certain times of the night, no matter when you actually go to bed, so if you go to bed late, you might feel light-headed and groggy the following day.
Join a workout group
When we’re unhappy with the way we look, it’s easy to shy away from going to the gyms and joining workout groups. Even though this is perfectly understandable, you should really consider joining such groups because working out in pairs and small groups boosts your energy levels and makes you feel motivated even more. You could start by inviting a friend for a walk, taking your pet for a walk to the nearby park, or perhaps joining a beginner’s yoga class. Start slowly and learn to rely on others, and you will soon learn that exercising is a great way to socialize too.
Most of these things we mentioned here aren’t too difficult to incorporate in your daily routine if you make a few simple changes. Even though it might be hard at first, it will greatly benefit your physical as well as mental health, and you will soon reap the benefits of these lifestyle changes. Not only will you be healthier but you’ll also notice that you’re much happier and more content than you used to be.
