Ensuring your children are staying fit and healthy is one of the top concerns amongst parents these days, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. More than ever, paying attention to how much exercise our children get and eating is of utmost importance.

The rise of the digital era means that many children seek solace in front of a screen and changing times means that, on average, children get less time to play outdoors than any other generation.
Exercise and movement all play a part in how your child develops and gives them the opportunities to express themselves and explore who they are. Encouraging age-appropriate exercise can help them learn valuable skills both mentally and physically and live their best lives.
When looking at extracurricular activities for your child to help them embrace both exercises in any form and build character and strength in the future, these are some of the best activities for children to help with their development.

Dance
Dance incorporates many different styles and techniques, and finding the appropriate dance class for your child can help them develop their skill in this discipline and do something enjoyable, which is also beneficial to their development.
Whether it is simply for fun or they want to pursue this as a potential career path, you want to make sure they are doing something they enjoy, even if it means swapping and changing at first, until you find the right dance style and teacher for them. Look for RAD Classes in your local area as a start, and then you can assess their needs once they get a feel for what it is they want to do.

Swimming
Swimming is a skill every child should have. Water safety is a huge concern amongst parents, and ensuring your child can swim from a young age can be beneficial in every way. Swimming for fun and sport is a great way to build strength and support joints, and keep the heart healthy in a more low-impact way than other types of exercise. Encouraging swimming lessons and then considering swimming clubs can be a great way to build water confidence, improve water safety and awareness in children, and help them stay fit and healthy.

Hiking
Hiking is a great activity the whole family can do. From joining local hiking groups and exploring the trails in your free time, getting out and about in nature can help your child stay fit and healthy and learn more about the world around them. You can also use this time to teach them how to be considerate of the environment and learn basic safety skills when hiking safely and what to do in an emergency.
Hiking needn’t be about the big extreme trails, the beauty of introducing kids to this great pastime is that you can start small to help them enjoy the hikes and then build up to those bigger trails and challenges.
One thing to consider when finding the best active extracurricular activities for your child is to take into account their starting ability and their passions. If you force them to do something they don’t enjoy, chances are it won’t be beneficial to them and could end up backfiring in the long run.

Until next time, shine amongst the stars!
